Macro DSLR Speed Challenge #105
Matches!
I hope this challenge has not been done too many times before. I did a history search and didn't find any, so I hope I'm safe.

Lots of "Google" ideas on how to capture 'matches', so let the fire begin!

That is to allow macro photos from any DSLR camera! in the Macro DSLR Speed Challenge.

This weeks Macro DSLR Speed Challenge topic is "Matches"
Show me a macro photo of matches. They can be lit, not lit, or in the process of being started.

Challenge #105 begins when posted, and ends Friday at 6:00 PM Central, January 14th, 2011.

Standard Rules apply:
Photo Submissions:
1. Camera - Any DSLR camera!
2. Lens - Any lens, or attachment that can give Macro photos (ex. extension tubes, bellows, macro filters, reverse mounted lens and of course a true macro lens.).
3. Time - any on-topic photo taken at any time is eligible, although photos that have won other competitions should NOT be entered.
4. Size - Please see the Image Posting Rules.
5. Post-Processing - do whatever you like and the host will decide if it works.
6. Posting -
* ONE Macro submission per photographer in each challenge.
* Photo Name/Title in the message.
* Camera model & lens used in the message.
* Post brief Exif data including ISO, shutter speed and aperture used in the message.
* Notes - anything you feel you need to explain.
7. Commenting - No commenting during challenge. When the posting is closed and a winner has been declared, comments can be made in this thread.
8. Questions - Use PM
9. Have FUN!

One challenge every week, on the following schedule:

* New Topic - After winner is declared.
* Posting Starts - Right after topic is announced.
* Posting Ends - Friday at 6:00 PM Central, January 14th, 2011 . Winner will be announced shortly thereafter.
* Winner from this competition decides the theme of the next one (and judges it for a winner) after this competition is closed.

I've been playing around with snow & ice macros since Atlanta got socked in and work was closed, but I wanted to shoot a few matches for this tonight. I'm glad I didn't set off my smoke alarm again with all the matches I used trying to get a good shot!

Strike 77
(for the number of shots it took to get to this one ;))

Contestants,

The time has come to judge a winner. We have 4 fine photos, but only 1 can win, so here is the order.

3rd Place goes to HG Wells Low Tech Inspiration by Rod M. - When I saw this photo I let out a big belly laugh! Great imagination.

2nd Place goes to Hot Head by John_B - Everything about this shot just looks right to me.

1st place goes to Strike 77 by LavaNut - Great job of catching the exact moment the match is catching fire. The color of the match head looks great. We can even see the ember developing inside the tip. Very well done.

I would also like to extend thanks to cp1005 for entering Match, anyone? It was a clean photo, and thought it deserved recognition.

Thanks to everyone for taking time out of your busy lives to enter into this contest.

Way to go Lisa! Nice entries from all.

I don't think it took Lisa 77 tries to get her shot, I think she just loved playing with matches and plain ran out of them...;)

Actually, the 77 count was based on the actual number of frames between the first shot and the keeper shot, so it did take 77 tries (but not 77 matches).

Taking macros of matches & candle flames & such is interesting, but to tell you the truth, the possibility of fire in my home scares me to death! That was one of the main reasons I wanted to move out of apartments many years ago. I check & double check to make sure I turn things off when leaving my house. Go figure I like to take macro shots of fire...

I enjoyed the other entries too. Rod, yours cracked me up! Monty, I've missed your entries lately!

Next challenge is up. We go from one extreme to the other... from fire to ICE.
(I'm not trying to piggy back your Freezing theme from the DSLR challenge. It's just cold around here, and it is winter!)

Congrats lavanut, great macro! :)
I cheated with my photo, I used a incense stick to light the match

Thanks John! And I wouldn't call using the incense stick "cheating". It's adaptive creativity to get the shot you want. ;-)a
