Nice comparison, might I add that the 7D @ ISO 800 may have been a mis-focus, as the shots at 1600 and 3200 seemed to have focused properly.

^Wow, perhaps something is wrong with your 7D? Mine doesn't look like that at all. Is it me or does the 7D seem more underexposed than the 5D? Could be my monitor since I am on a laptop...

Anyways, thanks for taking the time to do the comparison. Thanks for sharing.

Why are the 7D shutter speeds around 1/2 that of the 5D? Did you shoot in M to lock in the same settings?

I think you are right about the miss focus on the 800... My bad.

I have been wondering about that since doing this test, and looking at some of the pics others have posted, or maybe I have not gotten the sweet spot on it, the 7D is suppose to be very sensitive to noise when shooting at high ISO, I will do another test exposing to the right and see how it comes out...

But even with the noise aside, I still like the pics from the 5DMKII better.

I think I said why on the first post where the full pics are ( Page 4 ) Since I was trying to keep the marker on the center of the exposure meter. Yes, I was on on "M" and all of the other setting were the same on both cameras...

Just shoot the same settings completely, same shutter, etc. This way you are exposing the same light for the same time on each sensor. There aren't "small" differences in shutter speeds, the 5D was open for twice that of the 7D. The 7D metering is more sensitive and more elaborate than the 5D, so move just a little one way or another, and the white papers in your shot could have an effect over the black components.

Here is my 3200 to 25600 comparison I already did last year.

I think that you'll get much better noise results from the 7D by exposing to the right - try it and see for yourself.

Romeo,
You gave the twice the shutter speed to 7D each time.
Any reason for this?

Run the same exposure on both and micro adjust your lens on the 7D, then run this test. Give your honest impressions on the noise levels (still will be around 1 stop difference), and yes, you will still like the 5D over the 7D, but give the reason why from the visual cues, it will help you appreciate the capabilities of both more, as well as help you learn how to shoot with each to maximize its IQ.

One thing I've noticed so far is that the 5d2 files have much more latitude in PP; if you underexpose a 5d2 file you can push the exposure in PP without too much detriment, but I find the 7d files are much more sensitive to underexposure and subsequent PP - it seems especially important to expose to the right with the 7d.

Romeo,

Thank you for taking the time out to do this comparison test. The 7D seems darker. If I look at the back of the face down picture frame for each camera, the 7D looks much darker. Just an observation. Thanks.

I have to seriously question that comparison. Mis-focused shots, improper exposure, etc. The 5DII is a better camera, but the difference isn't nearly as significant as you're making it look.

Let's just not bash Romeo over this..
I don't think his intention was to present favorable conditions for the 5DMkII in this comparison.
As stated maybe it was just simple user error or simply a problem with his 7D.
7D's iso performance is nowhere near these pics..
