Let's just not bash Romeo over this..
I don't think his intention was to present favorable conditions for the 5DMkII in this comparison.
As stated maybe it was just simple user error or simply a problem with his 7D.
7D's iso performance is nowhere near these pics..

I'm not bashing him, I have no idea what his motives are and wouldn't assume to know. All I'm saying is this is not a good comparison that anyone should use when considering which camera to get. I'd hate for someone new here to come to this thread and make a decision based on that comparison.

You're right, and I wasn't solely referring to you, there were many negative comments over this. This is not a good comparison indeed, and I think even amateurs can tell that..

I understand exactly what Romeo did. He put both cameras into M mode, and then tried to equalize the FOV between the two, and set up the same apertures. The only thing he changed from shot to shot was the shutter speed, because he was trusting the in-camera metering to show him an exposure value of 0. The problem is that each camera has different metering tech, and it depends on the same metering modes on each, etc. The 7D is more sensitive with its new metering mode and sensors, and you can move the center point around in a scene and watch it wildly change on you. The 5D doesn't fluctuate as much.

When I do these comparisons, I first shoot the 5D2 and allow it to meter as it normally would and take the shot. I then set those same parameters up on the 7D and shoot it. This gives me very similar histograms in most cases, and then I do the 100% comparisons. This seems to be the most consistent and fair way to do it, but what do I know?

Those that think the 7D is really bad, probably set up their 7D the same way they do their other older cameras, and you cannot do that. The 7D takes some learning with its new AF modes and metering, etc. I think there are many things on the 7D that if you shoot the way you do with other cameras, it could provide the illusion that it just cannot handle high ISO or has good IQ, you have to spend some time with it and learn which modes, which settings, etc to use on it to get the most out of it. Couple this with the fact that the 7D does not like underexposure and the noise really pops if you shoot to the left, and I can see why so many don't think the 7D is that great. Learn to use it, set it up for success (highlight priority off, in-camera sharpening very low, standard noise reduction, etc), and the 7D will reward you. It is a finicky beast, no doubt! :)

I'm not a professional, but I was researching the differences and decided to go with the 7D mainly because of the price difference. I had no other Canon gear at all and would be spending about $3,500-$4,000 to get the 5DMarkII body with a lens and CF card and yadda yadda. Also, personally I'm not sure I will need a FF camera just now, don't really have the NEED for it.. though it would be nice! The 7D does 8 frames per second while the 5D only does 4. 8fps helps a bit when your doing action or have crazy kids running around. I have never used the 5DMarkII, but I am very happy with my decision to go with the 7D! Eventually I may upgrade, but as of right now I have no need to. Hope this helps!

From Canon Rumors about 5D Mark III. Some more clarification about the upcoming 5D Mark III. It will be moving a bit more high end with an improved 7D AF system. Expect it November/December 2011.

This really doesn't belong in this thread, but over in the rumors section, however thanks!

Been a little sick so I haven't been on here but everyone has their own opinion about both cameras and they are very interesting. I am going to go with the 5D2 and may later on get the 7D to have as a back up when I go to football games. I have seen many different picture comparisons and the 7D does seem to have a higher ISO but the 5D fits my needs more. Thanks again for all of the respnonses.

5D Mark II wins hands down when it comes to pure image quality. I have both cameras but the 5D 2 is better. Low Light, High ISO etc pictures POP and give you that WOW! Especially with fast L prime lenses. 35L eg.

If you're shooting stuff that moves fast on a regular basis then the 7D would be a good choice. With a little extra cash and your noted areas of interest, the 5DII or 5Dc sounds like the way to go. Both great cameras though.

I am not sure how the high ISO gives that pop, that would be simply from using fast lenses at close quarters, and really nothing much to do with ISO settings.

Something like this maybe? Where the background blurs out from using a fast lens, I assume that is the pop you are mentioning.
