I'm not bashing him, I have no idea what his motives are and wouldn't assume to know. All I'm saying is this is not a good comparison that anyone should use when considering which camera to get. I'd hate for someone new here to come to this thread and make a decision based on that comparison.
I understand exactly what Romeo did. He put both cameras into M mode, and then tried to equalize the FOV between the two, and set up the same apertures. The only thing he changed from shot to shot was the shutter speed, because he was trusting the in-camera metering to show him an exposure value of 0. The problem is that each camera has different metering tech, and it depends on the same metering modes on each, etc. The 7D is more sensitive with its new metering mode and sensors, and you can move the center point around in a scene and watch it wildly change on you. The 5D doesn't fluctuate as much.
When I do these comparisons, I first shoot the 5D2 and allow it to meter as it normally would and take the shot. I then set those same parameters up on the 7D and shoot it. This gives me very similar histograms in most cases, and then I do the 100% comparisons. This seems to be the most consistent and fair way to do it, but what do I know?
Those that think the 7D is really bad, probably set up their 7D the same way they do their other older cameras, and you cannot do that. The 7D takes some learning with its new AF modes and metering, etc. I think there are many things on the 7D that if you shoot the way you do with other cameras, it could provide the illusion that it just cannot handle high ISO or has good IQ, you have to spend some time with it and learn which modes, which settings, etc to use on it to get the most out of it. Couple this with the fact that the 7D does not like underexposure and the noise really pops if you shoot to the left, and I can see why so many don't think the 7D is that great. Learn to use it, set it up for success (highlight priority off, in-camera sharpening very low, standard noise reduction, etc), and the 7D will reward you. It is a finicky beast, no doubt!
