Hey all. I recently picked up a used 10D from another member, and I'd like to change the copyright/owner name. This should be easy, via EOS utility, but the manual for my copy claims it's not compatible with the 10/20/30D. If you open the utility, the options just stay grayed out.

I'm running Vista 32 bit, and the 10D doesn't like to talk with the PC. If you flip communication to PTP, you can pull images off the card, but if you leave communication on standard, windows can't find valid drivers, and a quick look at Canon shows that only XP drivers are available. I installed them for the heck of it, but no dice.

Is there an older version of EOS utility that I can use that works with the 10D, or is there some other program I can use to change the owner name?

I have no idea if this will work but here's a link to Canon's download site with EOS Utility ver. 2.6.1 being the first on the list, current version is 2.9.0. It shows it as last updated June 2009.

Good luck, I don't know if it will allow you to "downgrade" to an older version or if this version is old enough to work but you can try it and find out I guess.

I owe you one, Shell. You pointed me in the right direction. Although I couldn't downgrade the utility, I was able to read the older manual for it from that link. It told me two things. 1) An older release was needed (as expected) and 2) that the 10D is not vista compatible.

I torrented an older copy of EOS util and put it on my XP netbook. Bam, problem solved.

Thanks again.

Good, I'm glad it worked for you. I hate compatiblity issues.

Funnily enough, when Canon announced that they no longer support older cameras, 5D was among those listed as legacy cameras. I have been upgrading my software as they become available and currently use version 2.9.0 of EU (on XP). My 5D is still being picked up... :-)

I think the biggest part is that you're still using XP. The 10D/20D are not Windows Vista compatible (and probably not Win7 compat) and loading the old WIS drivers for XP don't remedy that problem. You can connect the camera to a Vista/7 PC if you set the camera to PTP, but then it's nothing but an extra slow glorified card reader.

Fortunately for me, I have so many PCs around that I can afford to have copies of XP loaded. My netbook was the only thing I had with an active copy at the time, and EOS utility was not very keen on installing on it, as the LCDs max resolution was not a minimum of 1024x768 (1024x600). I had to connect to an external display, install EOS, and now it couldn't care less what resolution I run in. Apparently the only time it checks is during the install.

Well, first you need to know that although the Canon site has software links for its cameras they require "evidence" of a previous installation. There are three ways that I know of to try this:

First, here are two links enabling you to download one of their apps. Try them, and then see if you can go to the Canon site and download the apps.

Here's one that installs the "original" Digital Photo Professional:

https://photography-on-the.net …hp?p=10433598&postcount=4

Here's a link to where you can install a "full" version of ZoomBrowser (pretty up-to-date):

http://www.usa.canon.com …os_60d#DriversAndSoftware (external link)

From there, you can run upgrades from the Canon site:

http://usa.canon.com …os_10d#DriversAndSoftware (external link)

And, here is a site that lets you do some "tweaks" if your upgrade attempts fall flat:

http://www.northlight-images.co.uk …stall_canon_software.html (external link)

Hope this helps!

Oh, and to do some of this you should have your camera serial number on hand!

I read this with interest as my daughter has got a second hand Canon 10D and we cannot get any software to work on her Windows XP laptop, though the cable connecting the two acknowledges the device.

Can I ask where you actually got the software from in the end?!

The 10D has an interface setting in the menu that you may need to change in order to have the camera show up on the PC, even though the USB bus detects it (the PTP / Standard thing I mentioned in the 1st post).

DPP will work just fine with the files from any Canon camera, or photoshop would, as well. I may have a copy of DPP somewhere that I can send you or upload somewhere. I do strongly suggest using a card reader for the purposes of moving images back and forth between the camera and PC, though.

You might try this site: http://www.northlight-images.co.uk …stall_canon_software.html (external link) Scroll down to "Method 3 - Much older software". There you can d/l a copy of the original Canon DPP, which you will then be able to use or update as you like.

Hmm, unfortunately that isn't working for me. I have the latest version of DPP installed but it does not appear to be enough to allow an update of any other software. EOS Utility and EOS Viewer Utility will not update and are asking for earlier copies. Any suggestions?

PS, forgot to mention that I tried the Northlight site registry update method and it was a complete no go. It gave a message saying it was not a registry script. Made sure it was exactly as stated in the instructions, but still a no go.

Update: I was able to hack the registry and con the installer into working by simply adding a subfolder in the Canon software folder and naming it with the proper name for the program needing an update. Now the challenge is getting the EOS Utility to work properly.

That's a pretty cool trick, if it really works. Did you have to add subfolders in the Applications Data folders for Canon as well?
