Press C to invoke the Crop tool. In the lower right corner of the Crop tool icon is a small arrow; if you click and hold on that arrow you will see a pop up menu with various crop options. One of those options is to show the Rule of Thirds grid when cropping.

i did as you suggested however its still not working for me.

btw im on a mac using cs5 if that matters.

if i do as you advised i get factors as an option 1:1, 3:4, 4:5, 5:7, custom and then clear crop

I tried doing it you way before and after i made a crop... both times i only get the same set of option.

Any other ideas?

Doesn't it have an option to keep the original aspect ratio? That is in fact a 2:3 aspect ratio if you are shooting with a DSLR.

I was looking for the same thing a while back and after searching the internet I learned that there is no Rule of Thirds grid in ACR. Are you sure it wasn't the grid in Photoshop you used?

There definitely is a Rule of Thirds overlay in Photoshop CS5/Adobe Camera Raw 6.x.

I'm using Photoshop CS5 and Adobe Camera Raw 6.3 on a Windows computer.

When I click the drop-down arrow for ACR's crop tool I get the following:

Then when I actually draw the area I want to crop I get the Rule of Thirds crop overlay:

I can't see why it should be any different on a Mac if you're using the same versions of the software.

Well, like the OP, I'm on a Mac, using CS5 and I don't have that option either in the pull-down menu. It looks like this:

Last year, when I googled on this, I came across a thread in the Adobe forums where people were asking Adobe to include a Rule of Thirds grid in ACR. Could be that they were talking about CS4 though.

Hm, we should cross reference this thread to the one asking why LR is better than ACR.:)

Heh...that's an idea. :D

To the OP: I don't have access to a Mac right now and the official ACR documentation doesn't even mention a crop overlay.

Edit: If you're absolutely convinced you had a Crop Overlay before you can delete the Camera Raw Preferences file and it will be rebuilt with the default settings the next time you run the application. Here's a link that shows the location of the Camera Raw Preferences file: http://kb2.adobe.com/cps/405/kb405012.html (external link)
