I took these photos a few months ago with a PowerShot S30 which was tricky enough to set and adjust given that I could only use one hand. There was no way that I could repeat the trick of focusing and parameter setting with my 350D and 70-200 L lens. :D While this wee guy (or female for all I know) was happy enough to pose for a few shots, he/she was quite content to sit there, and it was me that got fed up waiting for he/she to fly away.

Excellent shot, it's abdomen looks distended, perhaps a female full of eggs?

Thanks Paul. As to the abdomen, I've no idea what a pregnant butterfly looks like. ;)

Thanks for the complements guys. Apart from the single-handed issues of focusing etc, I couldn't have asked for a more patient model. I didn't even have to pay or get it to sign a release form... ;)

Wonderful shots... all the more amazing because they are one-handed!

The first shot is fantastic! Nice work on the capture - that one-handed stuff isn't so easy I know...

Thanks again everyone. It just shows you that although I have a better camera/lens setup now, there are still times where a simple P&S camera will give results not easily achieved by the better camera.

Too true! I tried a similat trick with a chickadee which was eating sunflower seeds out of my hand. The 10D with the 50mm f/1.8 was still too much, and I couldn't get the shutter speed fast enough while keeping enough DoF... It was frustrating.
