First, I'm not sure if this is the correct forum for this thread. The image can fall into 3 different categories: People, Glamour, and Experimental. Because it contains no nudity, and I consider it to be more of a portrait than strictly experimental I'm sharing it in the People gallery for me. Forgive me if I'm wrong about that.

Okay, so lets start off with some of the images...

I was inspired by Markderoo's stripe series (NSFW) earlier tonight when browsing the Glamour section of the forum. I was curious how he achieved such a look, and I thought that it might have incorporated a laser. I then thought some more about it and then decided that I would experiment with a cat laser toy I had sitting around to see what it would look like if I played around with it in a really dark room.

At first the images weren't anything too special, but after 30 minutes of trying different variations I ended up with several artistic shots of my wife that I really enjoyed. I thought that I should share my images with everyone here, and point you all to an article on my blog (external link) that I wrote that describes how you can produce the same effect.

I think that I will try this again in the near future and I will try to add a little bit of light to get a closer match to Markderoo's set.

Check out my website (external link) for the rest of the images, as well as a guide on how you can accomplish the same style really easily.

Very cool, especially the level of detail you obtained in the third one!

Cool Idea, however do not let the laser light shine directly into your camera, there has been some evidence it destroys the sensors.

Yeah, smart for you to bring that up. I remembered that lasers could harm your sensor after the fact and I was freaking out when I thought that I saw a few dead pixels on some pictures. Lightroom ended up removing them automatically when I went into Develop mode, so I'm not sure what that was about. I will need to shoot a test video to see if the same dead pixels actually do exist.

I've seen a laser breaking a censor (external link)on video a couple times, but I don't think that is what happened to me since I never pointed the laser straight at the camera. As long as you keep the laser from pointing in the lens of your camera you should be okay. 99% of my shots involved me standing behind the camera, where there was no chance of the laser ruining the sensor. The only shot that was risky was one where I sat behind the model to highlight the outline of her body. Her body should have been acting as a shield that would block the laser from directly entering the lens so I'm not too worried about that position. Now that I think about it, there is a slight chance that some laser light could have been reflected off of her wedding ring and into the lens. Just to play it safe I suggest that if you want to try this type of shoot, make your models remove anything super-reflective like jewelery.

I had another model sit for me today, and I have increased the number of shots on my website significantly. Below are some of the new shots:

In #6 you can see bits of the model's tattoo on her right side. She has dark lettering running down that side, which doesn't reflect the laser light, so the stripes of light are interrupted as the pass over that area. I think the next time I shoot her I will experiment some more with lasers over that area to see just how clear the tattoo could become with enough laser concentrations in that area.

I'm very new to photography so I'm still learning and haven't seen a lot of different "established" or known techniques yet but this is one of the coolest ones so far. VERY creative and it just works. Thank you for sharing!

These are very cool, very unique.

About the laser, I'm not an engineer or anything, but from what I understand, most lasers (and most household ones for sure) are actually quite safe to sensors, it's the higher powered ones that can cause damage. Most of the videos I've seen, revolved around commerical show systems that were possibly powered too high and thus caused damage.

Not to say that I would go pointing it into the mirror box or anything, but minor seepage and whatnot, shouldn't hurt anything.
