Hi, everyone,

I wanted to see if anyone could help me to get my pictures downloaded in the same order they were taken.

It seems as if since getting and using a card reader, when I download my images to the computer they are all over the place instead of in the order they were taken. I'm running windows XP home edition and the files come up in camera fax wizard, I don't remember having this problem when I download directly from the camera. Do you know a a way to change this?

Thanks for your help.

ETA: Oh, I have the 20D in case it mattered.

Don't take the default option, but open the card using Explorer and use "Copy to" in the File and Folder Tasks.

Do you have a specific reason to have them downloaded in order, or do you want to be able to view them in that order?

I use the technique Jon advises above. If you have some that you want to rearrange after the fact, you can sort them by file name (if you haven't renamed them), or sort them by date and time (which is in the EXIF data).

The file name sort should be available on most Windows applications. For the sort by date and time you may need to be in a photo application. I have used it in Paint Shop Pro Album.

Hope this helps.

Have Fun,

Rick

I assume Date/time is important to you...and it is to me, as I like them in order shot and it helps me remember what was going on when shot.

I suggest that you down load using either Downloader Pro(fee) or DIM4 (free). Both will rename to date/time and put in folders either by date of job/subject...plus lots of other options.

While you are looking at the Downloader site, you may want to check out BB PRO....lots of function that may interest you.

You should just be able to right click in the folder they are in and go to sort by: name, and they should be arranged in the order you took them, simply because of the naming system.

Have Fun,

Well, I'd just like to view them in the order and date taken, I don't want to scroll around looking for the other shot.........I want to see them in the sequence that I took them.

Thanks for the super fast replies, I take another look at what you guys suggested.

When downloading straight from the camera to EOS Viewer I don't have this problem. I'm wondering if I can set my machine up to use the EOS Viewer with the card reader:rolleyes:

I'm having a lot of fun!!

I have a Sandisk card reader and my G5 simply sees it as a dive.

There is no 'order' on a computer.. You choose how you want the computer to display the files.... By date, size, name etc..

If you view the files in 'Explorer' click on View -> Arrange Icons By -> Name..

If you don't reset your numbering, then all the files will be in the order you shot them.

You can also arrange the icons by size, type, modified, picture taken on, and dimensions....

If you use some other software rather than explorer, then you'll have to read up on how to sort your files by name or date...

If you are using XP, go to My Pictures, open the folder, go to the view button and click on Details for your view. Once you get the details up, click on "Date Picture Taken". Your pictures will then be sorted in order of oldest to newest or newest to oldest. I use this option all of the time. Nice & easy. I'm still new at PhotoShop CS so I'm not sure what the procedure is with that but I'm sure that there is something about the same on PSCS. Good luck :):)

I usually use Windows Explorer and select all files from the card reader to the folder that I want then drag them to that folder. Then if not in order, in Explorer go to "View", then "Arrange Icons by", then "Name" and whala. All done.

If you don't see the "File and Folder Tasks" list on the left side of Explorer, turn it on via "Tools | Folder Options | Tasks | Show common tasks . . ." You'll get a pop-up file structure you can choose (or create a new folder) the destination folder for.
With the "Open Command Window Here" and "Raw viewer" Power Toys installed, I go to the parent folder, right-click on the destination folder, choose "Open Command Window Here", and can batch rename (preference is Canon folder no-frame_camera.*) e.g. REN IMG_????.* 123-?????_20D.*. Default folder view's Slide show.
