Because its only natural to want the newest of the newest? i'd love to get myself a 5d3, but if the improvements arent so great (as in only mp increase, videostuff), then i'll be looking for a used 5d2.

Upgrades are going to be worthy. They are saying 1-2 stop improvement, AF system, DIGIC V. None of these are unreasonable improvements.

I bought a 5d Mark II because it is more camera than I need and will happily upgrade to the Mark III a couple of years after it is released!

I upgraded from the 40D to the 7D after two years. One of the major reasons for an upgrade was to get micro adjustment capability. My 70-200 was front focusing slightly, and I didn't use it much on the 40D because of that. With a slight MA on the 7D it is perfect. I went with the 7D over the 5D Mk II for a couple of reasons. I had two EF-S lenses, and I liked the AF system. Although the 7D is a great camera and I am still learning a lot about photography, I will get a 5D Mk III when it comes out, assuming it has the improvements most people assume it will have.

I'd rather have a bottle in front of me than a frontal lobotomy.

If you're worried about upgrading, better wait for the 5D Mark IV then. I heard it's got the new toaster oven attachment and blu-ray player.

Anyone have any idea when MkIII will be out?

Hi Ryan, I got the 5Dc about a year and a half after it came out. I bought it used. I would love to have the 5D MII, but decided that if Canon could not make a better AF, then I was going to wait to see what the 5D MIII would be.

I have to tell you, I love the 5D. For some reason, maybe because its FF, it makes such nice creamy smooth pictures. So I am very happy with it. I do want a smaller DSLR for the road, but its hard to match the beauty of the 5D.

just like buying a new computer....as soon as you buy it, something new and better will come out. if you keep waiting for the "next best thing", you won't end up with anything.

as others posted, when the 5D III comes out, the 5D II models aren't going to shut down and break on everyone, or start taking bad pictures.

it could come out next month, or next year. how many photo opportunities will you miss out on and say "man, I wish I had the 5D II for this shot".

I have a 5D II, and if they announce a 5D III next week, I won't be upgrading. the 5D II is plenty for my needs. maybe a few years down the road if they come out with a 5D IV, then I might upgrade to a 5D III once the price is lowered, asnd it fits my needs. I'm sure until then, even if they come out with a 5D IV, my 5D II will still produce beautiful photos. :-)

Well said...price for 5DM3 will be high. In Singapore, the 5DM2 body along is going at $3150 Singapore dollars. That about $2430 USD. So do you think 5DM3 will be at that price. I don't think so.

You can still find new 5DM2's around. I just bought mine brand new in September.

they are starting to show more and more commercials about the 5D II. I don't think they will stop production of them anytime soon. for those who don't want to take the plunge with the (more than likely more expensive) 5D III (if and when it ever comes out), people may pick up the 5D II as a "lower cost alternative", much like people will buy a Rebel T2i in lieu of a 7D since most consider it a "baby" 7D

If the 5DIII has the dual Digic IVs, and the AF system of the 7D, sign me up.

I suggest waiting for the 5D3; its bound to be a huge upgrade over the 5D2, which has major limitations.

Actually, I suggest waiting for the 5D4; its bound to be a huge upgrade over the 5D3, which has major limitations.

Actually, I suggest waiting for the 5D5; its bound to be a huge upgrade over the 5D4, which has major limitations.

Ad infinitum...

I think I can relate to OP's concern....
However, Canon usually make 1Ds model first, and then comes the prosumer model....
Wasn't that the case with 5D and 5D mkII?

If so, 1Ds Mk IV hasn't come out yet.... which leads me to believe that 5D Mk III is definitely beyond 2011....

I'm holding on to 1Ds Mk II until then.....:)

I disagree a bit with the notion of just buying now regardless of timing of future models. Unlike computers, the cycle between updates is 2-3 years and if it's a matter of a month or two to get the next generation, then I'd say for sure wait. However, to quell the need for a 'camera now' maybe just get an already depreciated 5D classic for under $1000 that you can resell for very minimal loss vs. say a 5D II which in real dollars has a lot more drop in it's future. The 5D will allow you to focus on EF lenses you want to invest in and allow you to get familiar with full frame DOF.
