Snapped this shot of my wife's sister, her husband & son while on Vacation. No flash or light modifiers, just midday light, as I always bring just a rebel body & 2 primes when I am on vacation, it is vacation.

Shot with XSi & 50mm 1.4 @ f/2 1/1000 ISO 100

All C&C is greatly appreciated. Thanks to everyone in advance

Charming family photo! Good focus and dof. I was going to suggest cropping the sides a bit, but perhaps a slight vignette instead? It has a nice open, airy, outdoor feel to it so maybe cropping would make it feel too closed in.

I agree with Rimmer. You may crop the empty space on the left and right, and a tint amount from the foreground.

Thanks all...........This imagine was actually already cropped, the original actually had even more open space around it, I feel if I crop more, larger prints I make wont be as sharp. It was only an Xsi, I am not sure how much I can crop & still make 8x10's?

But I will give it a test run & see how it comes out. Thank You

Sorry for repeating a suggestion, but have you given any thought to a little vignetting?

I just tried it with the slightest bit of vignetting and found that, because of the complexity and oof nature of the background you really can't even tell it is a vignette, it just darkens the background a bit and makes the family stand out.

Just a suggestion and personal taste. Either way you did a great job!

Just out of curiosity, is this an HDR image?

No, No HDR whatsoever. I only process my RAW files with ACR in PSE 7, I don't do anything else with my images, no cloning, no layers, no HDR.

Just out of curiosity, whats made you think it was possibly HDR?? : )

This image along with other two images that you posted in another thread seem a tad out of "natural." Don't get me wrong, I like them all, particularly the compositions of them! :)

Not a bad photo, but there's something about the angle from which it was taken that bugs me...

The more I look at, the more I think it has to do with the framing. There are too many horizons going on. The front edge of the blanket, the implied back edge of the balnket, the bottom of the fence and the top of the fence. I would like to see this if you had raised up just a bit to get the top edge of the fence outof the frame and use the bottom edge as the ONLY horizon in the photo... possibly right through the center of the photo (yes I know the rules, but the rules can be bent from time to time).

Your photos will take on a whole new life when you begin to think about these sort of things before pulling the trigger. This is something I have had to work on over the years.

Digital killed the Kodachrome star!
With a list of gear like that, what is your excuse?

Thanks for your thoughts. I love how in one of the 1st comments, someone said they look so natural, and then someone says it looks unnatural. Lol Everyone has there own opinion, but I love that, and thats what i love to hear, differnet perspectives..........speaking of perespectives, another example of this. You state how you like the composition, and in then next comment, he states the compostion is what is wrong with the photograph : )

Thanks again everyone, I love the C&C, just makes me better

I love this forum for the same reason you do: diversity of views. In the end, though, you're the one who has to be satisfied with a particular version... :)

Your photos will take on a whole new life when you begin to think about these sort of things before pulling the trigger. This is something I have had to work on over the years.

I thought I did think about it before I pushed the shutter button. Instead of just standing up there at our picnic, aiming the camera at them and shooting, like my wife did, LOL. I got down, layed on my stomach (got my shirt all dirty), adjusted my exposure, framed carefully, and then too the shot.

I also framed them right in the center, no rule of thirds here, thought it was defintly a better compositon for the 3 of them, so I did break the rules there.

However I should have definitley shot multiple angles, so I had choices when I got back home to the computer after vacation.

Thanks for your input, I will definitley have it on my mind next time Im out with my camera
