I would reconsider the restriction to one or the other. Why not both?

I like it when one subject acknowledges the camera in a two person photo. It's as if he is giving permission for the viewer to share in the moment. It's not as sharp as the second one, but that really doesn't matter. 5Dmk2, 40D, 10-22, 50 f/1.8, 24-70 f/2.8L, 70-200 f/2.8L MKII, 28-135 USM, 2x 580EX II, lots of other lighting gear.
