Something that I can carry a school book or 2, laptop or iPad, and a camera body/lens. If I could attach a tripod, that would be bonus points. Any suggestions?

ape case 1800 for a 14 inch notebook, or 2000 for larger

either bag would leave room for more equipment also

Did you want a shoulder bag or a backpack?

I'm checking out the above suggestions now.

I'm on the fence. I guess it just comes down to the design and look. I think I'd prefer a shoulder bag.

If I were you, I'd consider something like the UD series, but they are expensive. You can carry books and gear and a laptop, but you're talking heavy. What I like to do is decide what is more important. And the laptop always ends up at home, so I don't take my UD out unless I have to have the laptop.

Tom I'm a bagaholic, so I've got too many bags.
Sometimes I think I haven't learned enough yet. :)
Consider buying more bag than you need, so the next small purchase doesn't make it obsolete.
The reviews here are good; really appreciate it when the person whodid the review comes back a few months later and says whether they still like the bag.

Your description of "a couple of books" makes me wonder how well a shoulder bag will do.

A surprising bag for me is the Tenba Messenger bag. I have one--a large--and it served me well until I put a grip on my camera. (See?) For a smaller camera it would work fine. In fact I carry my G11 around in it as a compromise.

I don't have a laptop so I can't tell you what would fit.

Think Tank bags will last a lot longer than my Tenba.

Hope this helps.

Dave

Love the Ape Case brand. Very affordable, well made, and nice looking.

Well, more important isn't really an option, and I know it's heavy, I do it every week with 2 bags now. I'm a photo student in SF (which means lots of walking) and I'm tired of carrying 2 bags and a tripod. I feel like I'm going on vacation every day I have class!

Thanks for the tips. I'll make sure to check these bags out. I don't think there would ever be an increase in gear to the bag, just because it would be used for school, and I don't ever need more than a walk around lens, a tripod, and maybe a strobe.

Maybe that's the solution ;) or perhaps just a llama?
