I plan on getting a new monitor either a 23" or 25" I'm leaning toward a 25" but worry about it being too big.

What size would you buy if you were going to buy a new one.

I'm using a 17" and when I use DPP I have to turn the resolution up or it won't run but when I set it up the text is so small I have a hard time reading it.

I´m going to buy a 27" screen...
what I want is the performance.... more speed, better resolution( HD quality)
best possible RGB output.
As I use a 5Dmk II, the monitor has to be on the same level.
But it is not all about the screen... you need a high performance display card and drivers..

I have a 28 as my main monitor and a 24 as a second. Neither is too large for me but I have optimized my workspace around them. For me it's less about the size and more about the resolution. Both monitors are 1920x1200. One would think it's not that different from the 1920x1080 monitors, it's only 120 pixels after all, but it just seems a more natural resolution.

Depends on your budget. I'm going to be upgrading my 19". I want to get a 25 to 27 but might have to settle for a 23" because I want an IPS panel and the bigger ones are expensive.

I have two Dell 22" IPS panels (the Ultrasharp 2209WA's). The left one is in portrait mode. Could not be happier with this setup for post processing. I especially love the 1680x1050 resolution. Especially on the horizontal monitor I find 1920x1080 to be a bit on the wide side. 22" screen with 1680x1050 allows me to sit a tiny bit closer than the same width with full HD (would be something lke 24" I guess). Most of the extra 240 pixels on the wide side would be wasted space for me I guess.

Also, browsing flickr and potn on a vertical monitor is very comfy :D

Cool, yeah, I can imagine. I'm running 1440x900 right now (highest resolution possible) on my 19", which is almost 4 years old now. At this point I feel like almost anything would be an upgrade, even a 23" TN panel at Best Buy. :) But I'm holding out for an IPS.

I went from a 19in TFT to a 23in DEll U2311 IPS.I thought at 23in it might be a bit big but very soon got used to the size.If you have got the space and the cash get the 25in but get IPS.

Bigger is better. I told my wife the same thing when we bought our 58-inch plasma a few years ago, and now she thinks our 46-inch LCD is kinda small! :D

We used to say "there's no such thing as too big" for monitors, but many people actually found the 30" monitors too big.

IMHO 25-27 inch is perfect, and of you need more real estate it's because your screen is cluttered with tool bars in apps like photo shop or your raw converter. In this case, get a second monitor o dock the tool bars on. ( has light room finally matured enough to allow you to do this? )

Make sure you look at panel type as color depth on TN panels is pretty dismal. IPS should be what you're looking for, but I don't know that you can find anything like that in a brick and mortar. They are pretty easy to spot due to the price tag being significantly higher.

Of course if you have a cheap panel already it might be best not to look into it....;)

In general is there a big difference between the 1920x1080 and 1920x1200 in terms of overall happiness with your panel? I've seen some affordable 1080 displays but don't want to regret getting that instead of 1200. Thoughts?

I have been reading reviews on ips monitors and at Amazon they are numerous reports of the HP with color shift and dead pixels.

At least HP will replace them and that is better than Dell their warranty does NOT cover dead pixels so I will not be buying one of them.

From the reviews it seems the ips panels are over rated and over priced.

My choice is to uppgrade at once from 19"...
Just like CDS said.... 25-27" is perfect..
So the screen Ihave chosen now is 27", resolution 2560 x 1440 pixels, 16:9 format.
Graphic card has to be uppgaraded too, so my choice is ATI Radeon HD 4850
ans so does the processor, my choice is.Intel Core i7( 4 cores system)

It maight sound like I´m exaggerating, but trust me.... just upgrading your screens wont make you happy..
the more pixels, resolution and speed you require, the more you need to put
on processing, memory and graphic cards...

This will cost about 1500€ and I´m doing the job myself..

For photography work it is definitely worth going for a large screen, so long as your graphics card can cope with the resolution! Don't expect your old laptop's graphics card to be able to handle it. I have a 30" BENQ monitor. The other thing I have tried is working with two smaller 19" screens - a lot of graphics cards these days support this. The advantage of this is that 19" monitors are very cheap and replaceable, but I would go for 30" screen if I was working with photoshop all day.
