I used ACR and Bridge to do all my post-processing. I recently got lightroom due mostly to the buzz, and I spent a few hours in it. I'm still looking for one, single thing it does, which ACR/Bridge doesn't do. I have all the same controls for RAW work, adjustments, editing etc, and bridge allows me to sort by all kinds of metadata, I can have presets, everything.

Can someone name one thing I can't do in ACR/bridge, that I can in LR3? Thanks

Have you tried to use the brushes, graduated filters, and cropping tool? IDK but I've never used Adobe bridge or camera raw (outside of photoshop) but I can't imagine working without lightroom.

Can you adjust 6 (pick a number) different settings to 1000 photos in a few seconds.
Can you adjust the settings on Jpegs just as readily as with Raws.
Can you use presets that provide custom effects to your photos with one click.
These are a few of my favorite things.......
Speed processing of large numbers of photos is why I love Lightroom.

I thought Lightrooms biggest asset was it's cataloging ability.

I think the best feature of LR3 is it's "all-in-oneness" -- cataloging/editing/printing/exporting. I export a lot to the web (flickr/zenfolio/fb/costco(printing), so this is a real time saving.

Does Photoshop possess the ability to take photos from many different jobs in many different folders, and put them all into a single slide show for presentation to one client, while keeping the photos all in their original folders and not copying any of them to some new location?

Basically, to all these questions, the answer is yes.

When you guys talk about "speed" it is not lightroom that is fast, it's RAW processing that is fast. It's the fact that the sidecar files are metadata and raw processing is so fast.

Yes, I can apply raw settings to a thousand images in like a few seconds. And yes there are presets, and they're super easy to set up.

So, yes yes yes. lol

Then I would say that LR isn't for you...

It doesn't have to be, right?

Who is it for - someone who doesn't realize that you don't even need it? That's what I mean by the title of my thread - what benefit does it ad over ACR and bridge? The answer seems to be nothing.

Nothing for you... And that's fine.

It works for some and it doesn't work for others. I happen to like it a lot but I don't come from a Photoshop-centric world.

If it worked for everyone, there wouldn't be Bridge, Aperture, Gimp, Irfanview, etc, etc, etc...

It (LR) is less expensive to buy ($299), and to upgrade ($99) and is aimed at photographers.

Photoshop is more expensive to buy ($649 for CS5) and upgrade ($174), since it is aimed at the broader needs of graphic artists.

Well, there's a valid reason. First one I've heard - I didn't know that.

You can buy a full Lightroom and get six upgrades for less than the price of one CS5 and one upgrade! If you have little in the way of graphic arts needs, I would not bother with Photoshop for that reason alone.

You can see / search files that are off line (say: on a disconnected external disk).
LR is DAM software and a raw processor.
