I have a canon 85mm 1.8 lens and recently I have had a problem with the lens back focusing. I have not really had this issue before but I took several shots of my wife so she could update her profile picture on a website she is on. Of course on the back of the camera it looked fine but then when I went to check the focus I noticed that her ears where in focus but her eyes were totally out of focus. I remembered that someone had said on the 50D you could do microadjustments. So I adjusted this lens and it took a -6 to get it to focus right. I am just wondering if others have had the same problem with this lens. I love this lens but this was a little frustrating.

here is an example of the problem you can see the eyes are totally out of focus

I adjusted this lens on my 50D with a -6 in the end and it turned out like this. I am just surprised that it was fine and now off by this much.

I never did get the shot with my wife using the 85 I had to switch to the 28-70 here are those two shots just for fun.

I am going to bump this not because I need comments on the photos they were not meant to be stellar shots but I would love to hear if anyone else has had problems with this lens or has tried the microadjustment on their camera.

I was taking some full length portraits last night and had some problems, but that was wide open in a pretty dark hallway with a 20D, so Im assuming its the cameras fault. Didnt have any front focusing on tighter crops though, nailed all of those.

I would try to correct for it but the 20d lacks MA

Glad to hear others are having similar problems it is not just me. It just seem strange that it happened all at once.

I had similar problems getting a Tamron 17-50 f2.8 to focus on my 2 50Ds. I tried the micro adjusment and it didn't help. It was very inconsistent. I was so disappointed I returned the lens and bought a Canon 17-55 f2.8. Unfortunately the focus was better with Canon lens but still not ideal. I had to return both 50Ds to Canon for warranty repair. They now work fine but I did have to make minor micro adjustments to both 50Ds. So, the bottom line hear is you are not alone hear.

My 85 1.8 does good provided I'm relatively close to the subject. If I try to focus on something, say 20' away it misses every time.
