I took these shots yesterday at Shirley's Bay along the Ottawa River using my Sigma 50-500 and a Manfroto monopod and shoulder brace.

I'm not good with my shore bird IDs but think that these are a Greater (or Lesser?) yellowlegs and possibly some Sanderlings. I'd appreciate any corrections on the IDs.

Greater, and sanderlings. The tip to the greater/lesser is the length of their beak in relation to their head - the greater's beak is longer than it's head, while the lesser's is about equal. They're very tough to tell apart otherwise, unless you capture them together.

I love the shot of the GYL, though it could use some sharpening and some contrast. But a great pose and the water is wonderful. The sanderlings shot has *great* composition, but again some similar processing would help. Nice work on both.

Great shots, Stephen. I'm thinking of heading back there soon. Petrie Island is great but a change of scenery is sometimes needed to keep the variety going.

I like both of these shots--especially the second!
I think it makes for a nice composition--it really makes you look into the picture. Pretty cool.

Thank you all for taking the time to comment. The water level on the river was very low. I had rubber boots on so I walked out to a large rock that was in about 6 inches of water and just sat down and waited for the birds to come to me. They were starting to get pretty close when a couple anchored their outboard motor boat and began wading ashore straight into where the birds were feeding.

Within 30 second they had frightened all the birds further up the shore so I packed up and left! (They did apologise but I'm not sure how they couldn't see that I was obviously photographing something in or along on the water's edge.)

Grrrr...

However, you should hear CDS whenever someone walks by with a dog, or drives by on a jetski...
