Two Minis arrived this afternoon.
Took time to charge the batteries and then did a couple of shots for this thread.

Nice and compact. About the same size as the DIY mini I built last summer. (Pictured for comparison.)

The strap is attached about 90 degrees from what I would think it should be. Since I probably won't be using the strap it really doesn't matter. I'll probably take it off.

The bracket for attaching to a light stand works as one would expect. Need to thread the thumb screw in a turn or two. Then tighten once the bracket is around the light stand.

The weight of the unit tends to pull it to the bottom of the segment to which its attached. Maybe it would hold if the thumb screw were really tightened down. Not my style :-)

As shown in the pictures it comes with charger, battery, strap, and stand bracket.

No instruction book. The on-line information isn't really an instruction book, so I charged the battery before testing. When the charger is plugged into the Mini or a battery there is a red light that turns green when the battery is charged.

The table top setup I used to make the pictures used three Einsteins. Two were at full power through EZ-Pro octaboxes with two diffusion panels They each read F22 and were about 3 feet from the Mini. The third Einstein was below the table set to about 1/8 to 1/16 power with a 7" reflector aimed up at the translucent table top.

All three were plugged into a single extension cord. When plugged into the wall the main light took just over 2 seconds to recycle. When they were plugged into the Mini it took about 4.5 seconds to recycle. When they were plugged into the DIY Mini it took about 10 seconds to recycle.

These were the times I expected.

Pictures to follow (will require two follow on posts.

I would love to know how long it would last connected to a monolight with a cooling fan. The Bees dont have a fan right? I wonder how much time/power a fan would eat up of the power supply.

Wow...didn't realize it was only the size of a Pelican 1050 :-O
Is that a resettable fuse or a one time fuse?

p.s., the Einstein has a cooling fan, Mark1...wish it were temp controlled...

You're on a better UPS route than I am, David. My VML was out for delivery at 3:41 am this morning. It's now 7pm and the brown truck still hasn't shown up. Not unusual for him to appear at 7:30 or 8pm :(

Mark - my bees B800s have fans. I assume all the bees have fans.

Jeeze! 7:58pm the brown truck finally arrived. PCB got my order wrong. I had changed my order from 2 VMLs to 1 VML + 1 extra battery + 1 carrying case. Yup, 2 VMLs were in the box. Not a big deal. I'll straighten it out with PCB tomorrow. The seams of the battery cartridge of the one VML box I opened had separated in transit. The halves of the cartridge just snap together and happily did so under light finger pressure. I think the plastic housing around the lithium battery is fairly thin and compliant.

The VML is on the charger now so no flashing for a few hours.

David: What were they thinking with those wrong-way shoulder strap slots?

Still waiting for mines.... :-(

How is the battery secured to the converter? I don't see any latch. Is it only the friction of the Anderson powerpole connectors that holding it?

Intersting...

From the looks of those strap holes, i'd likely just take them out and slip in a belt.

The battery cartridge locks in place. There's a plastic tab on the bottom of the case that releases it:

EDIT: Notice how having "Paul C. Buff, Inc." displayed on the label wasn't enough. It also had to say BUFF in gigantic letters.

Seriously. When I saw that pic I tried to think of a good reason for the strap to be configured that way and I drew a blank.

Is the placement and extension of that tab likely to cause problems or inadvertently unlatch and release the battery?
