I frequently get what I consider an annoying shadow from the helmets in my softball pictures, like you see here. Do you have any suggestions aside from shooting without a helmet on? I like these particular types of photos because they depict the focus or intensity in a player's face.

Depending on your subject distance, some fill flash may do the trick to fill in some of the shadows. Of course, in harsh sun, you won't be able to get much distance from your subject before the flash power isn't sufficient.
