Aside from the focal length, are there any other factors I should consider when deciding between the Sigma 30 1.4 and Sigma 50 1.4 for my 40D? Do they offer about the same image quality and sharpness?

no difference, just FL

EDIT because of the FL, the 50 will offer more blur in your bokeh

They are pretty much identical (besides FL, weight/size of course). The 50mm is also compatible with FF while the 30mm is not.

Sorry to tack on OP's question but is sigma 50mm f1.4 also prone to AF/calibration issues like some folks have with their sigma 30mm f1.4?

I have 30mm f1.4 for my 1dmk2 and love it but would like to have 50mm option for my 5d.

Mine was fine out of the box, as far as the AF. However, I did return one, but it wasn't for AF issues. There was some particle inside the front element that was stuck. I tried to ignore it, but exchanged it because it would affect the resale value.
