I had a EF 70-200 2.8L IS USM come back from Canon saying they found a fungus around the lens assembly. They replaced the 3rd group lens.

Lens is about 2.5 years old. Well taken care of.

How do you keep the fungus from happening again?

Store your gear in a dry box - something that keeps the relative humidity somewhere around 40%.
