Sounds like it might be time to buy Direct from Japan and cut out the US retailers.

No need to change much -- if the price increase is only Canon USA, the "grey market" lenses shouldn't go up in price. So you could, in theory, get the same price by buying grey market...

In theory.

The rebates just expired.

As far as the cost of the 50 f/1.4, it's like Fureinku says, it's not going to cost $640. Current MSRP may be $580, but you can buy a new one w/ a US warranty from plenty of places for $359 or less.

$344 at B&H currently. Might just have to pull the trigger on this one.

The price is not going up to $640. I just got the price list from my rep. That lens will be going up to $379. There is a major price increase across the board for sure.

Again folks, as others have mentioned, street price isn't MSRP. If it's 344 now and going to 379, then we are looking at about 10% increase, at least on the 50 f1.4.

As the source says, everything seems to be going up at least 3%...and up to 10%.

As in all things, the product is worth what people will pay for it. They can raise prices and complain about how much the economy is hurting them. But they'll be crying to victims of the economy, not their parents who just want them to succeed.
Sure, prices will go up like they always do. Sales will also come up. A reactionary culture like we have here (read posts 1-20 in this thread) feeds on "Buy Now Before The Price Goes Up", But not nearly as much as we devour "All products 40% off" despite prices having just gone up 20%.

More confirmation is on CanonPriceWatch.com (external link), this is posted on their main page:
January 10th, 2011: CanonPriceWatch.com (external link) can confirm that Canon is increasing pricing as of February 1st, 2011.

Excerpt from a dealer e-mail:

"Canon has always strived to provide our partners with the best products at the best prices, but due to the current economic conditions around the world our cost of business is being severely impacted.

As a result of the economic struggles and fluctuating exchange rates, Canon USA is forced to take action on the pricing of most EF Lenses and Speedlites, effective February 1, 2011. The changes we are making on Invoice and MSRP pricing is effecting all partners across the board and will assist Canon in continuing to grow our brand and imaging business for not only ourselves, but for you the dealer as well."

No mention of the consumer, of course.

Nikon has MUCH more foresight than Canon. They set their prices 20% higher back in 2004.

Canon Price Increases -- List of Lenses & NEW PRICES

I was checking canon price watch and noticed they have a list of the lenses that will be increased in price on February 1st, 2011, with an estimate of how much they'll be selling for.

http://www.canonpricewatch.com/ (external link)

Most increases are between 3-10%. It's like a rebate, in reverse...

I saw the other thread, but started a new thread because this site has the actual list of lenses and the amounts, which I thought was useful.

This discussion prompted me to place an order for the nifty fifty with Crutchfield earlier this morning ~ the price was great, but it's backordered with no estimate yet for when it will be in stock again. My understanding is that Crutchfield will charge my credit card for the $89.99 when the lens is back in stock. Can anyone give me an idea if this is what will happen? I was originally planning to play around more with my new T2i and two kit lenses and eventually add the nifty fifty farther down the road, but discussions of price increases push me to buy now. ( Yes, I know, piddling amounts compared with other equipment purchases, but after investing in the T2i I'm counting pennies.)
