It has to do a lot with how weak the American dollar is to the Yen. It is killing us. I sure wish the United States money was worth a little bit more.

Sounds like it might be time to buy Direct from Japan and cut out the US retailers.

I live in Japan and believe me it is still cheaper for me to order thru B&H and have it delivered to me in Japan. Example, for me to buy a 17-40mm here would run around 1200 compared to around 750 in the states.

My understanding is that Crutchfield will charge my credit card for the $89.99 when the lens is back in stock. Can anyone give me an idea if this is what will happen?

In my experience they don't charge card until it ships.

I was checking canon price watch and noticed they have a list of the lenses that will be increased in price on February 1st, 2011, with an estimate of how much they'll be selling for.

http://www.canonpricewatch.com/ (external link)

Most increases are between 3-10%. It's like a rebate, in reverse...

Same info already posted.

Thanks ~ I guess I wasn't clear in asking my question. I'm wondering if Crutchfield will honor the $90 purchase price when they get more lenses in stock, or will they tell me it's no longer available at that price?

That was me, the day before. :)

Only yesterday did they put the price list up, before yesterday it was just the dealer e-mail. I thought the actual price list was worthy of a new mention.

Difficult to say.

Basically, the cost to the dealer is going up as of February 1st. Crutchfield is out of stock now, and placed a PO for lenses at the old price. It's up to Canon to decide if they want to fulfill the PO. Canon can choose not to fulfill the PO at the old price and cancel it on February 1st instead. Crutchfield will have to place a PO at the new price. The final decision would be up to Crutchfield if they want to cancel your order and make you order at the new price, or they may honor your old price and take a loss.

I think most retailers (B&H, Adorama) won't let you order an OOS/back-ordered lens for this very reason.

If Crutchfield has any scruples, they will honor the price as it was when the customer ordered. It's not the customer's fault the price went up in the meantime, and it was still open for purchase at the old price fair and square.

Crutchfield should honor the price, I've been ordering from them for 20 years and they've always been straight up.

Don't mean to steer off-topic here, but why do used lenses keep their value so well? I can think of no other consumer item that holds its resale value as much as a camera lens. None. It baffles me when I see people jump all over a used lens that is going for 85% of its "new" price. Anyone know why this is so? Is it simply because people will do anything to save a buck? Or is there another reason?

Can you take my picture on some railroad tracks?! No, that's illegal now. I'm really sorry.

Stupidity? There is no way in Hades I'm paying 85-90% of new for something that is used and carries no warranty, especially when an average repair on said item will run $300-$400. I'd rather buy a Canon refurb for a little more than the used price and than purchase a reputable extended warranty. Don't even get me started on Canon onlyoffering a 1 year warranty when Sigma offers 10, Tamron offers 7 and I believe even Nikon offers 5. How little faith do you have in your product that you only offer a 1 year warranty... especially when you are talking about a $1,500 lens.

I'd love to own L glass, but not at their retarded used prices and not with Canon's chintzy warranty.

Except as pointed out in another thread by someone in Japan, it is cheaper for them to order from B&H and have it shipped to Japan than to buy locally. So I'm not sure how much this has to do with the weak dollar.
