Hey guys!

I did a quick search and didn't really find anything specific to this so this is my question: I really enjoy doing all sorts of photography but most specific landscape and portraits. My question is, based on my lenses (in sig), which size of CPL should I get first? I wanted a decent Hoya one and I can't afford to get a 77mm and 58mm at the same time (am a poor college student lol), so would which size would be more beneficial to get first?

Thanks for the help! (:

this is a website which shows the results of a test conducted on several polarizing filters. i think the one that you suggested ranks in at number 14. anyhow, check that website out. :)

Cheap = more flare and contrast loss

Better to NOT buy a cheap filter at all, than to use a cheap filter...they have been PROVEN to HURT IQ!

In my youth, I had a Tiffen PL, and discovered it to be a PRISM which caused distortion to whatever passed thru it...I crushed in under my heel, rather than pass on that horrid filter to some unsuspecting innocent via the used market!

ebay for the 77mm to 58mm step up ring. Get a good cpl if you can. Hoya hmc is very. Here is a good read about cpl. They did not test the newer tiffen HT. But they are top notch as well.

Thanks! I decided to just save for the remainder of the semester and hopefully order a B+W 77mm Kaesemann from Maxsaver.net and use the step up ring.

After a lot of research, I don't want to spend $50 knowing I'll want the Kaesemann later on anyways. Does anyone know about how long it takes to receive them (since they say special order I assume it's pretty long)? I'm planning a trip to Spain in late May and if I can afford it, I want to get it for the trip. Also, are they difficult to use? Should I order it and get familiar with it before the trip?

The kaesemann is really good, I use them for my smaller camera. Sorry I have you spending more with that article. The Hoya super HMC are really good as well. And are less expensive.

But I have gone exclusively with Tiffen HT's and BW MRC and the BW Kaesemann now for my cpl. And have been happy with the performance.

Tribe - good choice . I have kaesemann's for all my lenses .
No they are not hard to use . From about sunrise till around 10 AM and from about 2PM till sunset - you can use .
Have the sun so you see out of the corner of your eye or over your shoulder . If you can see your shadow , turn till you can't .
There is a white mark on the CPL , when closest or furtherest from sun - you get the most effect .
You can also get up to about 3 stops of ND with it .
Get a rubber hood for it and pop in one section , easier to adjust the CPL .

Using a Kaesemann is no different than using a non-Kaesemann, photographically speaking. From a handling point of view, Kaesemann edges are sealed to prevent mold in between the layers, so they do not need to be babied as much as non-Kaesemann PL filter.

You can actually use it for other time and reasons only. They can be used to increase glare or decrease glare like at a auto show. Or when you are trying to get a reflection on or off a window. And they can also be used as a ND filter as they have about 3 stops.

+1 on the Kaesemann. I have one and it's smooth

Well, I've actually never used a CPL before, Wilt. Sorry haha. Thanks for the great advice r.morales and shoturtle.

Are you able to see the effect of the CPL in the viewfinder? Also, for cleaning can I use my Lenspen on it?
