Which camera, out of the 7D and the 5DII locks focus faster? Lens of choice: 135L. Under gym lights, say ISO 3200 @ f/2. Using single-shot or AI, between holding down the shutter button and hearing the beep. Thanks.

7D would have the faster focus IQ, for action use AI for still / slow use single shot

The 7d will be better for action, hands down.

Well, that's not exactly it. I just wanted to know which one locks onto a stable target faster, not tracking focus.

I don't have any data for the EF 135mm f/2L USM, but equipped with an EF-S 17-55mm f/2.8 IS USM, the 40D is one of the fastest cameras I've seen measured. It outclassed everything else at that time. Today, the 7D is just as fast.
This test was done by focusing manually at infinity, then measuring how fast the camera focused on a target two meters away. But then the 17-55 has very fast AF, of course.
A 5D Mark II, equipped with an EF 24-105mm f/4L IS USM lens, requires about 70% longer time to do exactly the same thing. These lenses are of course not identical, but at least of about the same physical size.

its a combination of the body and lens. in my experience, the 85mm f1.8 and the 300 f2.8 tops the list in focus acquisition.

it seems kinda wide anticipated that the 7d has a hugely advanced af system over the 5dII. according to your signature you already have a 7d, any trouble with that?

btw, iso3200@f/2 is pretty much worthless without a shutter speed.

Shutter speed would be 320 or 400. I'd assume that the focus lock will be the same speed at various shutter speeds.

I do not have a problem with the 7D, but I thought about switching to the 5DII for its DOF and IQ. Sometimes for the lenses. I sold my 70-200 2.8IS because it was too long to be used indoors.

I just needed a comparison on focusing speeds. The actual tracking, amount of focus points, and other 7D features does not matter much to me. I was fine with a 50D before I got a 7D, and I've *heard* that the 50D and 5DII focusing was similar.

focus lock will be the same at every iso as well. and at every aperture, given that the lens opens wide enough for the af sensor. if you want to describe the strength of ambient light (which i thought you were doing) the information of the shutter speed is important (iso3200@f/2, with 1/4000 it would be decent bright, with 1/8 it would be very dark). just for the record ;)

i cant imagine that those cameras show a significant difference in usable light, with a fast lens from af activation to lock in one shot mode with center point selected. all are top notch cameras and will perform great, can't help you with a direct comparison tho...
