Well... you're comparing zooms to primes. :)
That, by itself, is not a good starting point to compare sharpness! :D

I'm am probably the newest noob you can imagine here. not only am I new to this site, but I've only had my camera for 3 weeks. I absolutely LOVE this thread and this site. I think every picture in this thread has inspired me. I am just school girl giddy when I think about all the ideas I've got from this thread. THANK YOU, THANK YOU ALL- my new found friends.

Since I don't have anything but a 60D camera, and a 40 year old tripod that I've inherited from my father, I am some limitations of what can do. But thanks to a previous poster -Blazeneon (see post 1202) I thought I would give his idea a try. Although I wish I could have obtained better symmetry and filled the middle more like Blazeneon did, I do like the shot below that I wanted to share.

How about ISO 12233 charts?

100/2.8 vs 100/2.8L - Wide Open
http://www.the-digital-picture.com …omp=0&FLIComp=0&APIComp=0 (external link)

100/2.8 vs 100/2.8L - Stopped Down
http://www.the-digital-picture.com …omp=0&FLIComp=0&APIComp=5 (external link)

Now, if you can honestly say that the 100/2.8 isn't sharp, then the 2.8L isn't sharp either.

The L has a very slight edge on the non-L, but the difference isn't enough to say that the non-L is not sharp.

Some other comparisons....

Now there is a quote I never hear often spoken from others. :D Welcome to the club. Do not worry about your "lack" of gear. The only thing stopping you is your imagination. As for your spiral shot, a remote shutter release cable and the camera set to Bulb mode would have been ideal. You can get the release cables via E-bay out of China for $6. Beats paying the Canon price. You might as well get two or three for that price.

Enjoy your new toy.

So true; I love my 100 2.8 and my 50mm 1.4. Both are tack sharp and neither is an L lens. I think both would compare favorably with my (ex) 70-200 and 17-40, both of which were L lens.

Of the lenses I currently own, I would not say any of them is tack sharp. Maybe the nifty fifty, but I rarely use that one as I can't always get as close as I want to be to a subject.

Both at 1.4, the Sigma is sharper. And by quite a lot.

I made a good choice, I love my copy ;)

Thank you for this! These charts are really nice to have to compare lenses with!!

Looking at my nifty fifty, the charts are saying it is not that bad a lens. I may have to use it more often!

Indeed! It's an awsome and very simple piece of glass! Can't go wrong with 6 elements! ;)

There's a reason the nifty-50 is known as the best bang for buck Canon lens.

The Setup. Not the first type this sort of setup has been shown here. But I wanted to share regardless. Here is a shot of the camera gear used. Clicking the image will take you to an article that explains all the components.

IMAGE NOT FOUND

This image gives you an idea what the final setup would be.
IMAGE NOT FOUND
HTTP response: 404 | MIME changed to 'image/gif' | Byte size: ZERO | PHOTOBUCKET ERROR IMAGE

Here is what the final image looks like. This was taken at a 10.5:1 magnification. 167 images were captured and stacked to create a depth of view of around 1.27mm (0.05"). The scale in the top left gives you an idea how small this spider is. The camera was incremented around 0.0076mm (0.0003") for each shot. In this particular shot I used three LED desk lamps for illumination. The subject was propped onto a small leaf. And a green card was used as the background.

That, is insane. Seriously insane. How much that went into that shot from setup to the final result?

EDIT: Also, was the spider dead or completely frozen to stay sit for the shoot?
