Dug around for some old shots, mainly because I love this thread and want to contribute as much as possible. Also because I'm a show-off...

Why do I feel as if those are airsoft guns?

Because they are, sadly you don't win a prize for knowing that. I own only one real pistol and I don't keep it in the house...The "Beretta" is some cheapo plastic-fantastic, the other is a WE-Tech Dragon. I have a Well MB05 in the closet, bought that for the squirrels on our feeders...

Can't remember if the dragon came from Evike or not, I'm pretty sure it did, the Well came from Airsplat.

That's got to be one of the ugliest and tackiest pistols I've ever seen, I'm glad it's just airsoft as I can't imagine someone wasting a load of money on a real firearm that looks like that. As for shooting squirrels with an airsoft rifle, that's just cruel.

Still, some nice photos and you've pulled off the high contrast look well.

This is my first post here in this thread and thought I would submit something. Sorry about the PPT setup, but at the time, I wasn't thinking of posting a shot of it.
I saw this post https://photography-on-the.net …p?p=13661570#post13661570 and it made me think of my very simple off camera flash set up I did back in October before it got too cold.

I was on the side of the road not too deep into a farmers field. I kept having to run back and forth from the camera to the bike to check my shots for the framing and also the flash. I triggered the flash with the pop up on the camera. Come the spring, I am going to paint the bike with light after seeing the "transportation thread" on painting with light and I'm going to do a redo of this shot. Thanks for all the great ideas.

Nice and dramatic, would love to see what you can put together with some more effort, of course not saying you didn't put effort into this one ;)

I think toys should look like toys, so the "ugliness" of it doesn't bother me. I actually think it looks cool.

If it were a real pistol, it goes under the logic of "The customer gets what the customer wants"...meaning if the customer wants a meat tenderizer on their pistol, that's what they get.

As for shooting squirrels with the airsoft, at least I wasn't using the dragon for that. That's a gas-blowback and puts more power behind the pellets. The sniper rifle at best just gives them a sting, and something to think about the next time they want to terrorize the bird feeders. Works great on Grackle too. And while I'm not generally "cruel' I have been known to have a seriously bad and very fast temper, which is why tree rats and jackass birds get shot. If I was cruel I'd use my .44...

Thanks on the comments about the technical aspects of the photos. That's what I meant when I said I wanted to show off. I wasn't showing off the toys, although the Model 1's and the Brend are absolutely real, I was showing off the ability to get good shots from the most basic of setups.

If I recall correctly, not cropped:

Where did you find that battery pack? I need something like that to power some flashing lights on my bike.

Looks like a cordless phone battery. Like this (external link).

No, it was after 6pm in Western Alberta and the sun was setting fast. The shot in the setup pic was probably too open and needed some adjusting. That actual shot was taken at 6:34pm on 22 Oct 2011. Info was; F/5.6, 1/8, ISO-400 Focal Length 50mm with spot metering.

Since then I have learned a bit more and would do some of the settings differently in order to achieve a better picture.

Love this thread!

It's for RC vehicles actually, much bigger than a phone battery which wouldn't last you very long. You can find them cheap on Ebay along with chargers, in different voltages ranging from around 7.2v to 12v and maybe more. NiMh would be the cheapest, just make sure you get an appropriate charger, and the higher the mAh number the longer it will last.

Yeah, I suppose because it's just a toy there's a little bit of coolness to it in the same way a toy Robocop pistol or Halo weapon is cool. That's exactly what I meant by cruel, I've got no problem with killing pests if they're causing trouble but no airsoft gun would reliably kill them, for that you should at least be using a fairly powerful airgun shooting lead pellets. From what I've read about that rifle it's actually pretty damn powerful (still not enough to shoot pests) where as gas guns are known for being less powerful, a cheap AEG rifle would probably be the best for just scaring away the squirrels whilst also being the most fun.

Depends on distance. The gas-blowback will pierce skin easily at fair distance, the sniper rifle will do it at longer distance. The distance from the house to our feeders was enough that either in the right spot would easily kill a bird or squirrel. But, aiming for the fleshiest parts only gives them a serious sting. Most of the time I'd just ping the fence though because the sound of the BB hitting the fence was enough to scare them. I did manage to make a squirrel jump the 8 or so feet straight from the feeder to the fence when I hit it in the butt, was hilarious to see. Never saw a squirrel jump that far before.

Although I did have to nail a few squirrels and grackle. The grackle, believe it or not, were actually not phased all that much by direct hits, from either the dragon or the rifle.

And yes, the rifle does get good ratings, which is why I bought it. The ratings and the price. I would have preferred not to shoot the animals or birds at all, but our resident Coopers and Sharp-shinned hawks didn't come around enough to scare the pests away, and they only went after the smaller birds anyway.

Can't recall if it was Ebay or Meritline, but at least Ebay looks to have similar stuff for quite cheap:
http://www.ebay.com …2a17551763#ht_2540wt_1396 (external link)

I put my own connector there, and also built a charger from old laptop charger. LED ring lights from Meritline were next to nothing.

Here's what the ring lights can do:
