Are you the guy with that gorgeous underwater housing? That looks like the front of it on the floor in the setup photo.

Nice result, what lens was it taken with? Also how big's that brolly? It looks absolutely massive but I'm not sure if that's just the distortion playing tricks on me.

I'm pretty sure that's the distortion. I'm betting 4'.

Yeah, that looks like an AlienBees under it so I'd say the same thing.

It's lens. There's no such word as lense.

The setup:

IMAGE: http://dl.dropbox.com/u/34866668/Photo%20Share/IMG_20120113_100602.jpg

The blurb:

Thief!

This little guy comes every morning and steals the food straight out of the dog's bowl. Half the time he doesn't even wait for the dog to move! With my longest lens being my 24-70 on a full frame clearly I wasn't going to able to just sit quietly and grab a shot when I could, so I had to setup the tripod, flash and remote radio trigger...and wait...and wait...and wait. It's amazing just how cautious they are. He hopped around just out of camera range for AGES, just checking out the surroundings. After the sound of the mirror slapping and then the flash firing I'm pretty sure he won't be back for a while!

Kirk,

That is one heck of a result! How did you setup your metering, focus, etc. before he arrived, just using the dog food piled there?

GREAT shot!

Thanks. I had to use an aperture of f16. Since I was so close to the subject the DOF was seriously thin, even at that small aperture. I now see what the macro guys have to deal with! I pretty much just metered and focused on the food (live view helps a lot). A softbox would've been great but I don't have one yet. :(

Im assuming pre set manual focus, then set the exposure for the background/garden, then the ETTL function of the flash would have determined the flash power to correctly expose the bird.

(I havent quite got the handle on my flash yet though so I could be wrong)

I tried eTTL for a few test shots but got a few slight differences in between so switched to manual, I think it was on about 1/2 power (bit overcast here today).

I was a bit slow in posting there and ended up after your response :)

Manual flash never even crossed my mind there. Well executed! Ive got so much to learn with flash:confused:

It looks a wee bit over sharpened on my monitor. Did you sharpen or is the 24-70 that sharp??

It's definitely a bit more sharpening than I'd normally use but I really wanted to bring out some of the detail in the chest feathers.

But my copy of the 24-70 is brilliantly sharp as well under normal circumstances. Love that lens!

Surprisingly he came back!

Hinson, this one has very little additional sharpening. Pretty much just what Lightroom applies by default, and when I resize in PS I use the settings that are best for reduction. Not sure if I like the high contrast BW conversion but figured I would try anyway.

evo5ive: GREAT post! Do you know what kind of bird that is? Also, can you share your EXIF data?

This thread is my absolute favorite of all on POTN.
