evo5ive: GREAT post! Do you know what kind of bird that is? Also, can you share your EXIF data?

Thanks! This was shot at 1/200, f/16 with iso320. Flash was fired in manual mode at (I think) 1/2 power with the built-in diffuser in place. Setup was the same as the previous shot.

Can you post the color version as well?

No prob.

Personally I like the color version better and I really like this angle better too. Any chance you can look at your flash power setting, would be interesting to know that setting in keeping with the setup theme of this thread. :)

Yep, just confirmed it's 1/2 power. Angle is the exact same though, just the bird that's changed.

Right, I figured that much about the camera angle. I just like the side on action shot better. It more accurately tells the 'story' IMO. Thanks again for checking the flash power. The first one and even this one to a little degree the flash seems a tad hot to me. But I'm a newbie flash user so I really have no idea other than the bright spots seem a tad hot, like the flash power could be dialed back a tad more. Maybe a 1/3d of a stop more...?

I think you pretty much nailed the power of the flash, its prob just the harshness of direct flash that you are noticing askydiver.

Great shots, but watch your posting size. 1024 max on the largest side. :)

Here is a photo I took using a process I found on Gizmodo. The setup image here shows how you get the shot. First I was shooting with a macro lens, I also used a remote so as to limit any shake. I used a thin straw from one of those air cans to support the orange slice over the glass. Then I filled the glass with cream soda(clear) but any clear liquid with bubbles will do. Behind the glass (about 6 inches) I placed a panel with varied colour, since this is for contrast I picked a nice green and yellow textured bag. I used a LED light to illuminate it, this step is important it is what makes the image so nice, illuminated background with illuminated foreground. For that foreground illumination it was a simple flash bounced off the white ceiling.

Problems that I incurred were just a few, first was that the bubbles kept making the underside of the orange slice want to float so some tweaking was needed, second was getting a perfect orange slice, I wasted a couple of oranges learning what to do. Last problem was not having a perfectly clean glass there was a smudge that need some photoshop work.

Overall this is a great process and easy to do and I could see doing a few more of these and framing them in a kitchen.

Gorgeous orange. Love how you managed that beautiful green background too. Very hi tech.
