Seattle - I love those shots and like that one white piece of gum. When you shoot, do you have the lens completely parallel to the drops or do you shoot from an angle like in the setup pic?

Gary - I should have explained more since my setup pic is so crappy. I actually tried catching drops as they fell, but quickly gave that up since getting anything CLOSE to Ander's shots would be impossible. I then tried going in the completely opposite direction with this and shot them going UP. I guess you can't quite tell from the pic, but I used a syringe to shoot a steady stream into the air. Prefocused on the syringe tip and then slide it down a hair on the stand so it was out of the way.

Aww.. your set up pic isn't that bad. I know I just get used to looking for things that I think should be there.. I would have never imagined that you did it the way you did, and didn' t even notice the syringe.

Have you been getting good use with the Better Beamer for birds?

kawboy it's a Jobu gimbal. I chose it over the others because I liked the design, the locking mechanism and I wanted to go against the grain. It's a really nice piece and now they sell one with ball bearings in horizontal and vertical tilts.

Yes, yes it is. Luckily I have more intelligence to duck than I do to zoom out, which is why I keep chopping off wings. Always reminds me of that shot with the eagle attacking the photographer, you just know it had to hurt like hell, but all that was going through the photographer's mind was "Save the gear, save the gear!!"...

Thanks. I leave the camera at an angle to take the shot (Just like the picture).

First set up shot: I'm using a plastic lamp shade as a flash difuser. I think this is what a beauty dish does, but I'm just throwing fancy terms in the air here. This picture was taken with my tablet (EXIF says f/2.8... wow!)

Very clever! I think the bowl worked great (why do I never think of things like that?).
