What a great thread . . subscribing for sure.

Simple set up here, just my G9 on a Manfrotto 808RC4, getting ready for a 15 second (self-timer) exposure.

This photo was for the POTN G-series weekly contest #193, and the topic was Night Scenes. It was back in '08, and was my 1st post on POTN.

I knew that one was coming! Joined the forum in '06 to learn about the Canon digitals, but was still hooked on large format film. Finally went digital in '08 . . got tired of 8x10 Velvia at $12 per click!

It's fantastic so far. I was a little worried about the focus on distant objects as it seems to be hit and miss but I won't be using it for that so I'm not really bothered by it. Check out the test shots I did last night in the 85 1.4 thread.

(already posted a pic on the experimental thread, but thought it would be helpful & relevant here)

Wanted to do some water drop photography today, but didn't want to do the traditional method, and I like to play with fire.
So I brought out a lot of cotton balls, some 97% isopropyl and a lighter.
Put my biggest baking pan full of water on my black backdrop.
430ex II w/ blue gel is off to the right at 1/8 power at around 75 degrees angled at the ceiling.

Held the cotton ball soaked in isopropyl over the water, lit it on fire, and dropped it, holding down the shutter release on my remote trigger just after releasing the fireball.

Gooeydruid: This is/will-be one of the best posts in this thread. Great idea with a way cool result.

This thread is incredibly inspiring. It's getting me farther and farther out of my winter slump of nothing to shoot.

gooeydruid, that was cool, but also dangerous:)!

Why? I found myself thinking "hey, you could fill the pan with alcohol and light it before dropping the cotton ball in and...swoosh!

you just gave me an idea.
Take a pan of alcohol, and drop a lit match into it and catch a perfectly timed shot of the match splashing into it and lighting it all on fire at the same time.
Mmmmmm.

(Disclaimer: if you burn your house down or turn your cat into a burning furball, don't blame me)

Maybe try something that burns with more color, or add something to it to get more color? Perhaps something that floats on water to limit the cat fur removal potential? Can you put something reflective under the pan of water and see what happens?

(Disclaimer -- these are ideas for someone else to try, outside of their house, and in a fire safe area. Of course, the don't blame me clause applies :D)

Already planned...

Placing an order for Potassium chloride, Cupric sulfate, and Cupric chloride and the various alcohols they absorb in.

And then using the opposite color gel on the flash, should make for a striking light show!

Oh, and if anyone is crazy enough to do this with some of the chemicals I mentioned, please do it with ventilation in place.
Your lungs won't react well to some of the combustion by products of some compounds that give sweet colors.
