... switch to second-curtain flash.

Second-curtain sync still isn't available in Canon's wireless mode.

Good point, but could be fixed with an off-camera cord instead of wireless trigger.

This morning I saw a very small moth high on the wall of my bedroom. For the fun of it I decided to set up to get a shot of it. It took me ages! I set the camera on a focusing rail on the end of the accesory arm on my tallest tripod, then put a diffused flash on top of a tall lighting stand, as shown below (you can see the moth on the wall).

Here was my final result.

IMAGE: http://i72.photobucket.com/albums/i192/garlicpickle/Canon/lr1small--10.jpg

It would appear to be Agriphila tristella and is quite common - this individual seems to be quite worn around the edges. Despite all my efforts I still couldn't get the focal plane where I wanted it, as the lens was touching the wall, the flash trigger was touching the ceiling, and the tripod head was touching the curtain rail. Was it worth it? I'm not sure, but I enjoyed it, which is all that matters.

To show how much gear the shot entailed I laid it out and labelled it in this shot.

what lens did you use for this? I noticed the Aperture is missing in the exif data.
also thought it interesting you used a 5d for your setup photo and 7d for the photo guessing thats due to the lens of choice?

exif says it was shot at 50mm

my guess would be a 8mm of some sort. Maybe 8mm rokinon?

Fast head shot of a new pastor in town. I had about 10 minutes to setup and shoot it before they opened the room for the program.

EDIT: Just noticed I forgot to add the power of the flashes. The 430 was at 1/4power The other two at half power.

Maybe you should have raised the 430EX2 a bit... and have just a tad of hairlight, no?

Just a suggestion, please don't be offended. :)

Raising it more would not have done anything. Its already about 8 foot up. Hair lights rely on reflecting off of the side of the hair to create the sheen. With spiky hair it would not have worked as the camera and the light do not see the same side of the hair. (Note left side of hair vs right side. Left side is a direct reflection. Right side is opposite sides of hair.) Now it is possible to bring it in closer and just nuke the hair so it glows. But that is not the look I want on something like this.
