Fast head shot of a new pastor in town. I had about 10 minutes to setup and shoot it before they opened the room for the program.

I like the lighting but the background is a little busy (for my taste) for a headshot.

It definitely is busy. But it is also the front of the church where he works So I had no choice. And that is one reason I gelled it blue. It was an attempt to at least make it shades of the same color rather than 20 different colors... white wood, natural wood, beige walls, red cloth on the chairs, and a bunch of colors in a stained glass piece. As well as to separate him a bit more from the background.

Why didn't you just use a shallower DOF?

Simple.

It is a "person and place" portrait. Meaning the place it was taken is part of the story. Its not only about the person. But not quite an environmental port. Members of the church will instantly recognize the location and it has meaning to them. But to everybody else... I agree, it is just a busy background. But, as it was not shot for everybody else........

I like the image, I think it works, I just wish the left side of his face (viewer right) had less shadows but it's good otherwise .... but I have to know .... what's on his nose?

I really Like the framing of the watch in your setup shot hear shown on the camera's LCD. Looks much more pleasing and natural than the "final" shot you posted.
