Well, easy or not, they are stunning images :).

If you care to share any tips/techniques for us not so talented people, we would to hear :)

Look at every image-posting thread here. All of them, beginning to end - even just skimming them and read. Read more. Don't read the BS threads, read the technical threads regarding engineering and sensor design to maximize your current gear.

FWIW, I am a Mech Engineer.

I do too. :)

Is it a RRS tripod?
How do you find the tripod and ballhead stability wise for the long exposure shots?

I've got the RRS ballhead coming in the next couple of weeks which is going onto my old Manfrotto 055v tripod. It should hopefully be nice and stable.

Cheers, Paul.
If it moves, shoot it. If it shoots back, get a bigger lens.

Yes it's a TVC 34L. The RRS Tripod is the absolute best on the market, it does everything very well and it should for a $1700 setup.

I really Like the framing of the watch in your setup shot hear shown on the camera's LCD. Looks much more pleasing and natural than the "final" shot you posted.

Nice shot with a very simple setup. I like the initial framing also - it isn't quite as static. I have to ask, though; does your fiance know?

^^+1 ^^ And in my case, add import tax and customs charges to the tune of another $800.

Well I can't compete with the above, but I'm excited about getting a macro lens and being able to post in the thread.

I don't have a good setup, but one thing I realized was that I need to be in the basement on a concrete floor because of the vibrations in the house - if anyone starts walking around the shots get slightly blurred. Then I got all set up in this small area and tried to remove some fluff from the flytrap leaf I was first going to photograph and it snapped shut! Doh. It took me a while to figure out how to get the next leaf in a position I could photograph it without it moving or vibrating. Learning a lot about macro already!

Anyway, setup is 100mm macro with 65mm of extension tubes. The light is a fixed 500W bulb reflected off an umbrella. Focus stack of 27 images @f8.

And final result (unless I decide to edit out the 'fluff' or whatever it is).

Yep, the old story of you get what you pay for!

Same here, I get +15% for GST on anything coming through customs over NZ$400. It sucks but if you want it you gotta pay!
