This is a band promo shoot I have just finished, I replicated the setup below for all four members of the band, massively regretted not taking my seamless grey backdrop with me, masking was a nightmare. I have produced a video time-lapse of the editing if anyones interested, you can see that here (external link)

Great shot. Your video makes me appreciate the result that much more because of your attention to detail. I really liked the way you added the shadows. Seems so simple but I would never think that.

What is the 3d effect at the end when you look at the edits twisting all the way around until you are looking from behind?

Absolutely amazing they should be quite happy with what you did for them...

I created that effect in after effects, you can spread the layers of a PSD in 3d space then move a virtual camera around within that space. There is a plugin called pt_multiplane that with one click arranges the layers for you, you then just have to set your camera movement.

Wow! Bookmarked your Vimeo clip man, as I seriously need to watch that on a regular basis for inspiration! Outstanding results from no small amount of work. Sped up or slowed down, you make it look effortless. Hats off man to some great stuff!

Wow, that is so amazingly better than the usual "four guys with hands in jeans pockets, staring at the camera trying to look tough" shot.

I've moved away from using selections to cut people out of photos. Instead, I create a layer mask and then use a soft brush to paint transparency onto it. I find that technique to be much quicker and more forgiving. In particular, when I make a mistake it's trivial to reverse by swapping black and white and repainting.

All I want is a 10-2000 f/0.5L with no distortion that weighs 100 grams, fits in my pocket, and costs $300. Is that too much to ask?

Very nice touch, it really adds to the conclusion of your time lapse, thanks for the explanation...

I realize it was over 100 pages ago, but I had to bring this one back to the forefront, it just floored me!

Really cool, real artist there. We had to do something similar in school when we tried green screen video, outside and too small backdrop so we had to mask our actress feets :) . Short clip but real pain, i am clad we didn't have try anything like you did.

That kind of work inspires me to learn more

wow.. great job... I'm about to check out the time laspe video, so this might get answered there.

But when you mentioned bringing a background to make masking better, wouldn't that have eliminated your bare speedlight Waaaaay in the back?
