Hey Garry, I shot each band member separately with the speedlite right behind them (you can see it just behind his back foot on the above image) so I would of put the seamless background behind that.

A cold trip to the sea. I used a 5dc with a 17-40 attached and a Lee Bigstopper.

Why are you using the softbox like this?

Hate to say it but I was thinking the same thing...

My guess is it was already set up for other shots then he decided to switch it up and go with a more harsh light by turning the flash around and removing the front of the softbox. There's no need to completely break down your equipment in the middle of a shoot if you don't need to.

Is that not how you use a softbox?

Yes, stripped before putting it away. Will try another flash idea as this WAS NOT low key so will try again.

Well, the flash should be pointing into the box......;)

Nice shot! I always appreciate transforming a scene that looks unspectacular. A skill I'd like to have!

Glad you quoted this with the pics intact - even though it's at the top of the page I missed it. Really nice transformation of an otherwise dull scene into a fantastic capture! Well done.

Not at all. The flash should be pointed into the softbox. Shooting it this way, even with the diffuser down is almost defeating the purpose.
