I suspect most who read that post picked up on the sarcasm.

Hey, I'm old and grey and that's my excuse...

It could be taken both ways. They guy obviously has quite a bit of gear but then can't be bothered to google "low-key" to set it up right for the shot he's trying to take

No need to dis him - he said himself he figured out his setup was incorrect (perhaps he DID google it) and that he would try again and learn.

I don't think Hinson's answer to the OPs question is sarcastic. he just answered the question right.

Sorry was not having a go at Hinson Per Se, but my attempt was useless as i said first time and it sucked. Rather than take it down i took the obvious hits. But the soft box one was just i have not enough space to mop up then start again.
Sorry to Hinson, yes i have some gear, and i have done the whole low key thread stuff, just not good enough yet.Its all a learning curve, but the only thing i was not expecting was the softbox attack.

Low key as actually pretty easy to achieve. Getting rid of the white background would help. Essentially you want a majority of the image falling below the midpoint of the histogram. A quick way to do this would be to shoot on black. ;) You can use a flashlight, long exposure, and dark room to get there on the cheap........

Or you can set up you light close to the subject to give a dramatic light fall off and then expose for the highlights........

See - You post something, there's a bit of banter and we end up learning something. The thread works.
Thanks for posting your softbox/lowkey shot.

Yes we all learnt, how not to do low-key, also, the softbox must have the flash pointing in and the cheap white curtain must be down, other than that i think we all came out better photogs.:p
