On that basis then there should be no photographs of cars, or any other manufactured object come to that, methinks this is rubbish.
Let me give you a real live example. I'm retired and shoot cars at car shows for a hobby now. I create artistic (IMHO) (http://www.flickr.com …2/sets/72157629485697068/
) poster style images to sell to the owners. A few years ago, I created an image using a photo of a Shelby Cobra and posted it to Fine Art America. I sold a handful of images over the next year or so then got a letter from FAA saying they had pulled the image because of a cease and desist order from the Shelby lawyers. I responded with a letter to the lawyers and they graciously offered to license the image to me for a 'small' fee if they could in turn use it for promotional purposes.
I told them where to stick it and that was the end of it. But it does show that even using an image of a car, if used for commercial purposes violates the company's design trademark/copyright. I never had any idea.
