Heya,

Yessir, it's a motorized rotating head that turns at the rate of the earth relative to the stars basically. So you can expose for a long long time. It's polar aligned, but I don't bother aligning. I find you don't need it for wide field shots under 8 minutes.

my guess is that a lot of, if not all of, that illumination would have been from the flash. amazing how translucent human flesh is against a bright light

You can see similar with any bright light in the hand.
