Man, I gotta get me some more booms and clamps. I just have the one flimsy boom that's way too small for even this small head and medium strip.

Continued inspiration from Scatterbrained:

Any constructive critique is appreciated.

I like the shot...but something seems off. Was the bottle and glass shot separately? It almost seems that the glass was shot at more of and downward angle and the bottle more straight on. ( you see a lot of the back rim of the glass, but nothing on the back rim of bottle) Maybe it is just the difference in height or just my eyes...just something that I noticed.

No, they're from the same shot. If you click through to Flickr, the original is in there next to the final.

The glass is a little bit in front of the bottle, so that the tentacle is not in the highlight on the camera-left side of the bottle. That lends to a little bit of extra perspective distortion. I suppose I could have shot from slightly farther away, to minimize the perspective difference.

The reflections are all real, from the tabletop - not shopped.

The only other odd thing is that I did composite a tiny amount in the bottle - I adjusted the position of the main light a couple of times to change the edge reflections on the bottle cap, and on the raised lettering on the front of the bottle. The edge light on the top of the bottle cap might be the culprit - but I felt it was needed, otherwise there wasn't any separation up top - you can see this in the original.

I love the kraken shot. But it seems to me that the tentacle should be coming out of the glass, instead of behind it.

Gotta have something to do while I star gaze and wait for a 4~5 minute exposure to complete.

Very best,

haha. What's the best way to do that? Just hold down the wired remote button?

Bulb mode: Press the shutter button once to start exposure, go have a smoke, come back and press shutter button again to stop exposure.

I use a digital remote timer shutter release. Cheap $15 thing. I set the camera to Bulb, and then let the timer do the actual exposure times in seconds. It can do intervals, multiple shots, etc. Essential tool for anyone who does long exposure and wants control and hands-free.

Very best,

Heya,

So I had to venture outside of my comfort zone of wildlife, macro and portraits. And went for a "product" shot type thing for a project.

Very best,

Although I do have a digital/electronic cable release, I never use that. I haven't needed an intervalometer, and I've been satisfied with just doing a self-timing Bulb release for longer exposures.

My only note here is that with Bulb and a cable release, it's easy, the cable release has a "lock" position for the button, so you can set/lock the shutter open, do whatever suits your fancy, and then just unlock/release the shutter.

It's not just good for long/night/star shots, but can be good for lightning as well. I use Bulb and a cable release for fireworks, but typically only have the button down for 2-4 seconds, so don't bother with locking.
