But for the specific setup above, would there be any gain from the octabox?

Yes, The light wouldn't spill everywhere as much as umbrella. And a gridded octa would be even more controlled.

You could also use a lower power level with an octa as all* of the light going sideways, like straight at the camera, would be reflected towards the subject. Longer battery, faster recharge.

*All is a generalization and not perfectly accurate.

Is your camera on the tripod pictured? I think I am going to have to give this setup a try.

It's not. I had the tripod set up to hold up the bounce board and I was underneath it hunched over, shooting the pic lol

Black plexiglass. A mirror would cause doubling of a reflection, not as clean looking.

Heya,

A simple setup today. Selling some equipment, so wanted to make a nice setup to show the gear for the sale.

Setup:

Single light setup.

Flashpoint 120ws strobe (cheap $50 strobe)
Godox 31" Brolly Box ($20 brolly)
Yongnuo 603c transceiver
Cheetah Boom Stand
Black Acrylic Sheet for Surface
Black Muslin Sheet

Used placement from background and inverse square law to get an all black background with a close proximity light source (the softbox was right on top of the stuff basically) at low power.

Camera is a 5Dc and 17-40L with a YN603c triggering the light.
