Yongnuo's have been known to have variations in color balance. I still have a couple of the original YN-560's with the LED lights on the back. Some people have had to add gels to color correct one so it matched the other, etc.

Not intentionally. I see what you are talking about on Reed in the last shot. That shot was last year so before I had the 360, it's all hodge podge speedlights: two very different YNs (one with LCD one without) an old Vivitar, and somewhere is a Cannon.

Really, reall nice work with your bodybuilders. I've wanted to do similar work, so it's nice to see real-world examples.

To be honest, I wasn't at all distracted by the varying color temps of your flashes. Good work. :-)

It's not temp variation. It's the position of the kicker's which forms a direct reflection that would always appears to be brighter than main light otherwise, there would be no purpose for kicker.

I got an empty fish tank, turned it on its side, and put an LED floodlight in it. Then I put a bit of paper on top, and a dead flower on top of that...

I learn a lot about portraiture and light from the Dutch Masters and Caravaggio. Recently, I discovered Velázquez is even more extreme with hard light, and particularly contrast, in some of his work. I have been exploring light suppression in my white box of a studio while generating window light. First, one of my results:

IMAGE: http://patternassociates.com/rico/nikon/misc/rico111.jpg

Then the setup:

IMAGE: http://patternassociates.com/rico/fm/rico111b.jpg

Subject is sandwiched between two 4x2 flags (seen edge on), with double scrim overhead to reduce hair illumination. Backdrop is black, of course. The single light with Profoto NarrowBeam dish is bouncing off foamcore for the window effect.

Nicely done! Contrasty lighting does indeed look like Caravaggio's portraits.

Lots of great setups and final photos!

Here's mine:

My daughter's high school indoor percussion ensemble had their homeshow (where they host other schools) last Sunday and with their downtime, I was able to setup in the props garage with the following.

Canon 6D with Sigma 70-200mm f/2.8 tethered to laptop running Lightroom CC and external monitor

Main light Neweer NW-985 set at 1/16 power and triggered by Yongnuo YN622C with 31" octobox and boom

Secondary lights: Neewer TT-560 set at 1/32, camera left blue gel on reflective umbrella, camera right red gel on shoot through

Background is 4'x6' black collapsible

DJ smoke machine (pain in the rear because it would cool down after every few shots) between subject and secondary lights

Camera settings 104mm, f/4.5, 1/160 sec., ISO 100

I've yet to pick one of these up myself, but have heard very good things regarding uses just like you have here. Nice shot btw.

Thanks! It got to be a pain near the end too because I wasn't paying attention to how much smoke was in there and I didn't air out before a few shots. Live and learn, then reshoot.

I've also read good reviews about Atmosphere Aerosol (http://petapixel.com …hine-for-your-camera-bag/ (external link)) and would've gotten that if I had time to get a few cans, also if I'd known about the cooling down of the machine. Another thought for next time is to get a fan to push the smoke away from their faces right before shooting, or just have it between the lens and the subject blowing past, not towards.

The other cool thing is each background is different between poses. No need to shoot a bunch and then add them in later with Photoshop. Bad thing, it will set off smoke alarms, hence shooting in the garage and not the school.
