Portrait I took of a new friend last week. Also made a BTS video for the shoot if anyone is interested. In the video I go over the best gear for anyone just starting off camera flash. =)

I watched the Youtube video last night. I always enjoy them and the fun BTS notes. Well done.

With that key-light mini-zoom at that distance and ambient, about what power is the flash on, or is it in TTL? The 2 together are really lighting her well given the 2 layers of diffusion in each box. The key light specular highlights on her nose/cheek/forehead almost look too hot, yet I see all the detail. A lot is perhaps due to the contrast with the background.

Mostly Canon Stuff. Flashpoint Explor600/Zoom Li-On. Always learning.

I was inspired by K Soze's post to try my hand at a similar image.

I want to say that both were on the lowest power. I used the mini as key because I needed it to be really low as I always want the key to be as close as possible for soft light. Since the lowest power on the regular speedlite is more than the lowest on the mini that's why it shows up brighter. The output of both really came out great right away. This shot was meant to be a test shot.

Always appreciate your contributions to this thread, FJ... Labels, video bts, and all... On a side note, may I recommend removing her panty line on her right hip in post? My eyes actually focus at that nuance... Hehe...

in the pic I see the 31x31 softbox is neewer, but in the video, I see you shooting with a Glow softbox. I've got a 32x32 neewer, but I've been seeing Glow pop up a lot in my Adorama searches. Which one do you like better? I leave my neewer flat, and not folded back into a circle because I'm afraid it's going to break.

What started as a simple comment really got blown out of proportion. I decided to step away from the conversation and just let it be after DaviSto's last comment. It really isn't that big of a deal. IMO, to each his own with regards to their opinions about what is appropriate when posting. Who's really to say what is right or wrong?? If it is blatantly offensive the mods can sort it out.

Having said this I'm compelled to reply to your comment which sure has an aggressive and vindictive tone.

1. I don't agree that "Nice set up or Cool shot" is critique in it's usual sense. It's simply a positive comment.
2. I do think it's okay to make positive comments. I am of the opinion that unless the posting member is asking for CC, than I only make positive comments.
3. I don't even understand what you might be suggesting by me going to a quiet corner, blah, blah, blah....

I think you are trolling. We let this go a couple days ago. Why do you feel the need to stir the pot?

I've been following this and I'm not stirring the pot, but this is something that comes up a lot in photography groups and I can't help but think how strange a world it is when its somehow inherently implied that only positive comments are permitted, as that such a weird form of censorship usually reserved for more child like environments.

I don't have a point really, but its something that I wanted to say, I guess I find it funny how situations like this even arise, and personoally I'd much prefer people to tell me what they thought, as opposed to only seeing platitudes, as that gives a false sense of worth to me. This is how we end up with what I call X-Factor syndrome, where all anyone does is give praise, you then end up on TV in front of a panel of people who are paid to be brutally honest and we've all seen how that can end.

I would like to make one think very clear.....I DO NOT feel strongly one way or the other regarding the topic of unsolicited critique and I have no desire to argue the point. That said, somehow I've let myself get sucked into this conversation and one comment back at me was more aggressive than necessary.

Mindeater....I totally hear what your saying and honestly, I totally agree. I don't think X-Factor syndrome is good for anyone, i.e. young kids in sports that really need to learn to be good losers. I've been part of the POTN community for quite a while. On the whole I have refrained from getting into any opinion based debates. Because I'm not here to teach anything to anyone I generally keep it all happy and fluffy (even if that is superficial and fake). I remember early on reading through some comments from a similar discussion. I guess what I've taken from that in the past is that CC is typically reserved for the dedicated CC thread. Now is that how it always shakes out....obviously not. Rethinking things it seems that I'm clearly in the minority. And hey, that's cool. No worries. Again, I don't feel real strong one way or the other. That's about it.

Now sheesh, I wish I had something to post to get this thread back on topic!

Not at all, I've agreed with everything you've said.

I try not to make waves here and make light and fluffy comments usually, all the while keeping my mouth shut even when I think I might be helpful to someone ... for fear of this exact thread discussion. Truth is, a lot of photographers are terribly thin skinned. If you can't handle someone not liking your photo, don't post it to the internet. One of the best photographers I've ever seen has the thinnest skin I've ever seen ... it makes me "blinding white rage level" angry, but such is our world I guess.

Seems like we're all on the same page here. My comments aren't pointed at anyone, just backing up idsurfer cuz he feels alone :)

I give C&C's, suggestions, and my personal views on images all the time... Good or bad or WORSE, lol... The hardest part about a forum, usergroup, and/or social media platform is the 'delivery of tone'... More so when there's 'bad' critique of some sort... I've had my share of 'heated discussions' on this board... It is what it is... We're all creative human beings... And we all have different perspectives and approaches with our workflow... That's what makes POTN a great place to visit and learn, while appreciating this forum as a whole...

:)

PS. Cory... YOU ROCK!!! Hehehehehe... ;)

...

I’m truly sorry you thought I was more aggressive than necessary, I was in no way ‘aggressive’ from my viewpoint, but I would admit to ‘blunt’.

My unfortunate bluntness, due in part to me posting a ‘fact’ you weren’t prepared for. Sorry but ‘nice picture’ is critique.
That was my only point, it’s still true, and I’m still not being aggressive.

BTW if you want to see needless aggression, head over to G&N and tell someone that the rules state they’re not allowed to post their personal opinion on the models. :p
Even though it’s upgolding the rules, even the mods come and join in the attack.
