Would You Buy Directly From Canon?

Normally I purchase photo gear from B&H and have been happy with them. I recently noticed on the American Express rewards website, if I were to purchase through Canon I get 3x points. I checked Canon's website and they list the 5D at the same price B&H is selling it for. I will be purchasing a fair amount of gear in the next couple months and am curious what the collective wisdom is. Thanks.

Best, Bruce

Why wouldn't you buy direct from the Manufacturer?

I would check if you have to pay tax at the Canon site and at B&H.

If neither for both then why not if the price is the same and shipping is similar.

If you only have to pay taxes at the canon site (the case for me in IL) then you would have to weight how much the points are worth to you.

Canon charges everyone tax IIRC.

I think Canon collects sale tax on everyone.

Good to know I was wondering about this having never ordered directly from the manufacturer.

I wouldn't hesitate to order from Canon - but I'll shop at B&H / Adorama first since their prices are generally lower.

That's good to hear that Canon is starting to charge reasonable prices. In the past when I looked, buying directly from their website was at least 15-20% more expensive than Adorama, B&H, etc. That said, the monetary factor (of which American Express points would figure in) is the only thing I'd really consider making my decision. As you've experienced, the customer service at B&H is excellent, and I truly doubt Canon could do any better. I've never actually ordered directly from Canon, however.

I confirmed Canon will charge the state tax, so with that in mind and the fact I have always received great service from B&H, I will be purchasing once again from them. Why mess with a good thing and will still earn points on my Amex, just not as many. Thanks for the replies.
