So you guys are saying that a b800 alone in a ocatabox won't be strong enough to overpower the sun?

That is correct, I dont believe a b800 will overpower the sun. Through an octabox you're looking at shooting near full power or even full power if you're shooting into the sun... The picture I posted above was through a beautydish on the 1600.

Too much "overpowering the sun talk", I shoot with just a Quadra and have used a Quadra for beach glamour (in hot Australian sun). If you know what you're doing or don't mind slightly harder light, 400WS is going to suffice.

Here are 2 shots. Both with a B800, mid day and full sun. One is using a shoot thru and the other is using the 7in reflector.

I stand corrected I guess the B800 will suffice.

It depends on the situation. I've tried shooting a person being backlit by the sun and 600ws barely cut. It was April and around 10AM so I had to use a .9 nd filter to cut the ambient. For most situations a ab800 at full power should probably suffice.

Now, I will say that there is no chance of a wide f stop. The first was around f11 and 1/320th I think. The second was like f 16 and 1/250th. So depending on the look, a 800 will most likely not be the weapon of choice. But, I guess it's better than nothing.

B1600@ $360
X1600@ $440
X3200@ $550

I just cant make up my mind.

When I was considering these options I opted to go with a couple Elinchrom 600RX units and a Vagabond II (soon to be swapped for a Vagabond Mini). After seeing the quadra in action outdoors, it just wasnt enough power. Indoors its awesome! Also there is mixed reviews as to using the Quadra with larger modifiers and whether or not it can hold them. Also I didnt like being so dependent upon the battery. I dont always shoot outdoors and dont always need portable power. And if it ever dies, its expensive to replace. I liked the idea of having my portable power source separate.
