Considering a G12 w/ Underwater Housing, just wanted to know if anyone has tried this yet and if they like the results. I need a compact I can carry around, but want one with decent performance and controls. I was looking at the D10 but don't really like the design or bulkiness. I figured if I go with a G12, I can attach the Underwater Housing when needed and take it off when I want to throw it in my pocket.

I have the housing but haven't had the chance to use it much.

It might be helpful to tell us what sort of uw use you plan.

Have fun

I have the G7 with the Canon water box. I only used it once at Fort Jefferson State Park in the Dry Tortugas. Everything works fine in the box. All of the controls are accessable and the pictures came out good. However, it's pretty difficult to catch the under sea wild life while your trying to look through the view-finder with a mask and snorkle. The camera went to sleep a few times, so next time I will adjust the sleep timer to avoid that. The water box is a bit bulky to swim with. If you strap it to your wrist and try to swim it is a hinderance for sure. Next time I will tether it to my waist with a quick release D-ring or something. The Dry Tortugas had little to photograph underwater so I didn't keep any of those pictures, being my first try. I am going to Grand Caymen in a few months and will try it again there.
If I were to do it again I would get an Olympus 8000 series Tough camera. They are safe for about 33 foot depths which I think is similar to the Canon water box. This would be much easier to swim with and it would be much less bulky than the water box.
No disrespect to the Canon lovers.

I use the Canon model UW case for the G9. I also own the G11, but do not have the UW case for it. The Canon case is good to 130 feet, not 33 feet. The case is rather bulky, but most of them are.

I have the G11 and the Canon housing. It suit my needs well at the price I am willing to pay. I don't find it particularly bulky for the quality of the images I get. If you look at enough reviews, you'll find that any of the Olympus Tough series have far inferior image quality.

Here's one of the many images I've taken with my G11 and OEM housing.

I have the G9 and Canon housing. They work great. I first had an S45 with housing and it was great on a trip to Hawaii. Henceforth one of my requirements if buying an new P&S is that a housing is available.

I've used the G12 and the G9 with an underwater housing and my advice to you would be to use the camera with the housing on it a lot before you get in the water so that you can get used to the controls. Those fish move fast and they don't give you much time for the shot.
Also once you go under about 45 feet the colors all fade to greens and purples. If you want really good shots without the flash you need to stay above 30 feet. I've done about 10 dives with this set up and my best shots are always in shallow water.
One of these days I'd like to get a nice strobe but my wish list is big and I don't dive often enough for it to be on top. Have fun on your dives!!

Dennis, Does your G11 fit in the G9 housing? My G9 just broke and I hope I could upgrade the camera and keep my housing.

I've got the Ikelite housing with a strobe, and I disagree about the comment above about staying above 30 feet. You just have to get really close for the strobe to have a good effect in my opinion.

This shot was at about 40 feet.

But there are quite a few fairly recent threads in here on the G12 and underwater housings as well you can read and check out. (getting back to the OP's original question)
