Just ordered a Hoya 77mm SUPER-HMC (external link) to protect my 24-70L. Not sure if a filter is needed to complete the weather seal (?), but in addition to the hood should provide some extra protection and hopefully keep out the dust ;)

Anyone using this filter? Are you happy with it? Any situations where you've had to take it off because it was affecting the image?

I used to use those, but upgraded all my filters to the Hoya HD line.

The better coatings and higher density glass are great.

I had flare problems with the one I got, went with the Hoya Pro 1d range and no more flare issues

The digital pro 1 from hoya is the best UV protector form hoya, and it is better then the super hmc. But does cost more.

The problem with the SMC line of polarizers is that they have no outer threads (last time I checked), otherwise their 6 layes of coating plus a protective layer are superior to the Pro-1D (but not the older SMC Pro-1). Unfortunately Hoya continues to have issues keeping their polarizers together, ie retention clip issues. I have several and have had them factory repaired several times. I don't know where you're getting your info re the Pro-1D's being better than the SMC in their UV line...other than from their ads. Further, I doubt Hoya or THK would agree that their Pro-1D line is "their best" relative to their HD line.

The Hoya Pro 1 Digital actually has lower light transmission (97% transmision...same as the Hoya HMC line) than the Hoya S-HMC (99.7% transmission). The features touted by the Pro Digital are rather questionable 'benefits' with absolutely no quantitative information backing up the marketing hype (unlike what Hoya usually does to quantify benefit of a line of filters).

The HD filters are very, very close in transmission (99.4%) and have the benefit of easier-to-clean-without-streaking coatings.

You're using UV filters? Welcome to the dark side! I'm surprised there aren't more tolls in here spouting the "uv filters are stupid" malarkey. They serve their purpose. All my L-lens are protected--the cheapo lenses go bare.
