First real cloudy day in about 8 months....not white puffy clouds, but real clouds. It even sprinkled for about 5 minutes!

Curious

An Afghan Man eyes our patrol as he is collecting up scraps of wood to heat his home that night. Since their aren't any crops growing in this season, most of the men just collect firewood to stay warm and live off of whatever they happened to hold on to from the summer.

Fire

Some kids make their own little fire inside a broken bottle to keep themselves entertained (Their local school will soon be re-opened for the first time in decades.)

Dinner

An Afghan Policeman makes dinner for himself and his comrades. We got this school totally fixed up, painted all the walls nice and white, and of course, the ANP go and put their kitchen back up against the wall and make a nice big black soot patch on the brand new white wall....

In the Spotlight

Enjoying his few seconds of fame, a kid taking a break from helping to collect firewood himself. I wonder how long that jacket has been passed around his family.

Passing Time

This elder is doing just that, passing the time until call to prayer. He sat there for a couple hours, just waiting. As soon as call to prayer came out he got up and went away, in the meantime I got this shot shooting from the hip. (just couldn't find a spot where he wasn't going to notice me taking his picture, and had this particular framing.) Not only is he passing time, but I felt that he represented the passage of time himself.

Another outing where I probably would have left the 50D at home due to low light, but the 5DII with its great ISO performance managed to crank out 2 shots that made it into my personal portfolio/gallery as some of my favorites. I'll let you all guess which ones haha.

Anyhow, if you all happen to pass by western seminary in Holland, MI; they have a display of some of my photos up with a little description for each. I've never seen it myself but my dad sent me a picture of the display, and it looks pretty good.

There are some more from this day on my FLICKR (in my sig), these are my fave 5, but there are some good ones in there as well.

Thanks for looking!

All great shots and the last is even more impressive being shot from the hip.

I'm pretty sure 5 made your portfolio and either 1 or 3.

Thanks for sharing.

These are great. We don't really get to see this side of the Afghans' lives. Number 5 is especially good.

Nice set. I feel like a lot of people forget how desolate Afghanistan is.

Thanks all, I really liked shooting this set too. It has been a while since I got to take pictures of people, recently it's been landscape, maybe "figure in a landscape" etc. I was pretty damn excited to get a chance to shoot portraits for a change this time.
