What do you use while flying?
What do you use once you get there?

I've always flown with my camera bag as one of my carry on bags. It's worked pretty well in the past, but now that I'm flying with my son a bit more, it's become very hard to deal with my camera bag, a bag with other carry on crap for him, him, and then his backpack. Add to all that a tripod and it's a handful. Here you can see what I just flew with:

IMAGE: http://www.benjacobsenphoto.com/blog/wp-content/gallery/antigua-2011-nex5/nex-5dsc01756.jpg
  • thinktankphoto sling (on a shoulder strap for the trip and backpack strap once there) loaded (heavy!)
  • crumpler famous wine bar backpack with other "stuff"
  • enduro CT-313 on shoulder strap
  • my son's backpack (he wore it most of the time)
  • my son

not only that, but our second flight on our way home was cancelled leaving us stuck in Charlotte overnight so back and forth to the airport and twice the lines and security for our flight home...

So this leave me wanting/needing a roller honestly. But I've got an issue. I can't shoot out of a roller once I get where I'm going? I need some sort of bag once there, either my sling (converted to a backpack) or a shoulder bag. So do you guys just put that bag in your checked bag and use a photo roller, or do you put that bag INTO some other roller? I'm just trying to see what everyone else uses so I can get some ideas to draw from. Here's what I've thought of:
  • photo roller (TT airport take off or pelican 1514, put the camera bag into my checked bag
  • pelican 1510 w/o inserts, or normal roller bag with my retro10 or sling20 INSIDE it as carry on

Thanks

Not sure your price range but check these out. There TSA approved or something along those lines, pretty nice.

I use a Lowepro Pro Runner. Handles all my gear. I always put my tripod in my flight luggage. I think it would pretty hard to break a CF tripod, even for the airlines, and it keeps it out of the way and not garnering any additional security scrutiny.

On occassion, when I can watch it be done, I will check my camera equipment plane side. I just make sure to tell the stewardess that it is very expensive camera gear. They will mark it fragile and walk it over to the guys loading the plane. Pick it up the second the plane lands.

Seems like you could find a bag big enough to stuff your kid's bag in too.

I try not to ever check luggage, so it usually consists of one small luggage bag overhead and then a camera bag for my Camera, Lenses, Laptop, and other small electronics.

Tripod goes in the suitcase. That leaves me with a camera bag and an optional other carry bag. Just picked up an Airport Takeoff; I can pack gear in either that or the Domke (usually F1 or F7) and other stuff in the other. An F1/F7 can squash under window or aisle seats in many airliners (CLT-PVD, I'm guessing SouthWest or USAir) if not stuffed to the limits.

I take a carry-on luggage and fit my tripod in there (Gitzo GT3530S), along with my clothes and other miscellaneous stuff. I also bring on my F-stop Loka bag as my "personal item," fill it up with my camera gear, and store it under the airline seat in front of me.

I've only looked at this online but would be keen to see it to see if it does what I need, it's the Crumpler Cork and Fork a roller that gives the freedom of taking the backpack out so you can ditch the roller.

Bit pricey, but very cool!!

I check the tripod. Gear goes into a Pelican 1510. I take the ThinkTank Rotation 360 on my shoulder with books and a sandwich, etc. When I get to where I'm going, I put the gear I need in the backpack and lock the rest in the Pelican in my room.

Carry-on always. Either my Pelican 1510 or Burton dslr backpack.

You don't mention how much actual equipment you have which is necessary to recommend specific bags.
But if just one DSLR and 2 lenses maximum my suggestion is to get a carry on as small as possible and pack your tripod in your check in luggage.

I'm considering getting the small, Lowepro classified 160, which will take my simple dslr setup, as well as my iPad.
