Could you guys show some examples of that "3D thingy stuff"?
I keep wondering how it looks like...

I've been thinking that 3D is a bad way to call the effect, most people think the images should pop like how 3D is done now in video and with Polarizing glasses. In the case of "Zeiss 3D" its more like a sense of clairty, there's so much detail and edge accutance that it almost feels like you're looking through window instead of a picture. I've also seen this effect from lenses like the Canon 24L but in general the whole line of Zeiss lenses can give this effect rather easily.

I'm in the process of converting my techno-phobe wife into a camera geek like me and, as I already have the 35L, I'm taking this opportunity to get the 2/35 as my "replacement" when I hand my 5Dc + 35L over to her and get a 5D2.

Good ploy, don't you think ?

Don't get me wrong, I love the 35L and it's suits me just fine that I don't have to sell it to get the Zeiss. I'll definitely be using it for taking photos of the kids as I doubt I'd be able to focus manually with any accuracy when they're concerned. Little buggers come running straight over to me as soon as I point the camera anywhere near them ! Which inevitably ends up with naughty little finger prints all over the front element .......

I have never considered the Leica R 35/2 or the Samyang 35/1.4, as I don't know anything about these lenses. Are they manual focus? Do they have focus confirmation? How is IQ?

I have considered the Canon 28/1.8 and the Sigma 30/1.4 too, but there is something about the others.

I wish the 35L was a little bit cheaper, that would make the choice easier.

I've had both (35L and Zeiss 35/2) and they are both excellent choices. I have neither now. I have a Contax 35 PC Distagon.

Samyang 35/1.4 hasn't been released yet, think it will be in stores in march. Their Samyang 85/1.4 produce similar images to 85L but for a very small price.

Their lenses don't send any information to the camera, so you can get a AF-confirm chip if you buy the Canon version or Nikon adapter with AF-confirm if you get the Nikon version.

I have Samyang 14/2.8 and Samyang 85/1.4 and they are really nice, well built and great image quality.

Some would probably choose the Zeiss Contax/Rollei 35/1.4 over the modern f/2 too

Oh this talk about the 35ZE has wetted my appetite for the 35mm again. Just has to resist temptation until the release of the new 35/1.4 Distagon and compare between the two.

I'm thinking about switching over to Nikon so if someone is interested in my ZE35 shoot me a pm. It's only 2-3 months old. The rendering is awesome. I love the zeiss colors.

Thanks for all the great feed back! I realize the Zeiss is Manual focus. When I asked about focus issues with the Zeiss, I was referring to any potential situation where it might confirm focus but actually be out of focus. Like I constantly hear about with the Sigma 30 (AF of course though). I hope that makes since.

The focus confirmation is completely up to the camera in that situation, the lens isn't doing anything to affect whether or not you get the Beep and Confirmation. If you get yourself a EF-S Focus Screen (external link)... you can ignore the camera's focus confirmation and just do it by eye. It's ment for lenses f/2.8 and faster.

I've witnessed some images from the Rollei in one of these threads somewhere. Wow and more Wow! If I only had an endless budget and enough time to shoot them all!

Just to play devils advocate to what I was saying earlier. Here is a 3d-ish sample from when I rented a 35L, and had a 7d. That's an awesome combo by the way.

Same here. The Zeiss 35/1.4 is one of those rare lenses that good wide open and fantastic stopped down with no real weaknesses as far as resolution. Hopefully they didn't change too much in the new one.

It seems that Zeiss has published the datasheet for the new ZE 35/1.4 and Lloyd posted it on his blog:

Now if someone can pull the MTF of ZE 35/2 and the old Contax//Rollei 35/1.4 MTF for comparison :D

I would add the nikkor-o 35 f2 auto to the mix. It might not have the name recognition of a Zeiss or Leica but it is still one heck of a good lens.

Here it is on my 5d mk1

5D, 30D and some primes.
