Has anybody found a real solution to not being able to view RAW previews in Windows 7 x64??

I've been searching, but canon does not provide for x64 users. And installing live gallery to me is not a real solution. I just want previews show in windows explorer as with any other filetype.

I have the same problem with Windows XP, I would like to view the thumbnails directly in explorer like the jpgs. I installed MS windows Thumbnailer but it doesn't run. I tried the Arcsoft tool idem. I have also installed the Canon RAW Codec 1,8 but the result is always the same.
Thanks for your help.

dinifra -
I have the solution for XP. Download and install this applet
http://www.dalibor.cz/files/DaliferLite.zip (external link)
You will have thumbnails in Explorer and an item in the right-click menu that will display Exif, display the embedded jpg full sized or extract the jpg. It is safe, I have had it in my computers for at least 8 years. I don't know how it will work with Vista or Win 7.

You have a few options; most of which require you to spend some money:

1. FastPictureViewer Codec Pack: http://www.fastpictureviewer.com/codecs/ (external link)
2. Aardfry codecs: http://www.ardfry.com/Products.htm (external link)
3. MysticThumbs: http://mysticcoder.net/mysticthumbs.html (external link)
4. Arcsoft Raw Thumbnailer (compatible with Windows 7 32-bit only): http://www.arcsoft.com …title.asp?ProductCode=RTV (external link)

There are other options like Microsoft Raw Thumbnail Viewer but it hasn't been updated for a while. If you have a newer camera its unlikely that it will display thumbnails for images shot with that camera; see the readme file: http://www.microsoft.com …66FD4A3286&displaylang=en (external link)

Personally I use FastPictureViewer Codec Pack and I highly recommend it. Until a few months ago it was distributed on a "donation" basis but now the developer is charging a nominal fee. You may still be able to find version 1.70, the last "free" version, by searching online.

Ardfry's pricing structure is unappealing to me whereas FPV gives you all the codecs you'd ever need in one package for a low price.

BTW, even if you install Windows Live Gallery you'd still need a codec of some sort. The codec is the interface between the thumbnail/image display software and the operating system.

This program works for the 350D, 40D, and 5D2, so chances are good that it will work for the 400D.

To me it's just not an issue because I know that to view and do anything with Raw files I want to use a compatible app, meaning either DPP, Lightroom or Bridge. Raw is not an actual image format, so I don't expect "generic" image viewing apps to translate the files into actual images.

Highly recommended. I've tried this and the Ardfry solution and this is better.

Anyone tried installing Irfanview, and the plugins?

If you then open any folder, open any image from preview, then file-thumbnails, is that an option?

(only have Vista and 7 x86 so can't say it will work on x64!)

I use Lightroom to catalog my photos, so I didn't know this was a problem. That's crazy that Windows 7 doesn't support RAW previews in 64-bit.

If you shoot large numbers of photos under deadlines you'd quickly realize that it wastes a considerable amount of time to import images in Lightroom just to preview them.

Its not Microsoft's fault; they provide the hooks into their operating system through the Windows Imaging Component. The camera manufacturers need to step up and supply 64-bit codecs for people who prefer to preview image thumbnails through the operating system. Neither Nikon nor Canon provides 64-bit codecs even though 64-bit systems are widely in use now.

Does Canon think 64-bit operating systems will go away?

Canon's raw format is proprietary, so it's not a windows issue at all.

I hear shades of Bill Gates saying 640 MB ought to be enough for anybody. :)

Check this out: Win 7 64-bit, some CR2s open and some don't. I downloaded Canon's codec 1.8 and it didn't change anything.
